Does anyone here have any evidence Teflon is dangerous?
I had heard of this Lawsuit, and NPR did a story about it today, and It goes on trial Thursday.

1. Ronald Reagan
He was referred to as "The Teflon President".

If that doesn't prove that Teflon is dangerous, I don't know what does!

;-)

2. It is known to emit poisonous gasses when heated over 500
NEVER heat a teflon pan without something in it, and never use one in an oven.

7. Yes, I know the story being told, but I'm looking for the evidence.
There are so many bogus RW law and "Pro-american" groups out there now, that I'd like to see what those who are arguing this are calling evidence.

13. "The story being told" is supported by research, tests and studies.
Find the studies on line or from the institutes that conducted them.

You are not likely to find them randomly posted here on DU.

EPA Finally Gets on DuPont's Case About Teflon Risks

EPA charges DuPont hid Teflon's risks

January 18, 2005

By Michael Hawthorne Tribune staff reporter

More than 50 years after DuPont started producing Teflon near this Ohio River town, federal officials are accusing the company of hiding information suggesting that a chemical used to make the popular stick- and stain-resistant coating might cause cancer, birth defects and other ailments.

Environmental regulators are particularly alarmed because scientists are finding perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA, in the blood of people worldwide, and it takes years for the chemical to leave the body. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reported last week that exposure even to low levels of PFOA could be harmful.

With virtually no government oversight, PFOA has been used since the early 1950s in the manufacture of non-stick cookware, rain-repellent clothing and hundreds of other products. The EPA says at this point there is no reason for consumers to stop using those items. But so many unresolved questions remain about PFOA that the agency is asking an outside panel of experts to assess the risks.

and filter it out pretty quickly -- valuable skills to learn for any search. Plus, by reading through several (or more) accurate sites, you get a broader view of the issue. 15-30 minutes should be quite adequate, unless your searching skills are not well developed (in which case, the exercise and time spent would be extremely valuable).

DU isn't immune to biased answers, either. I'd at least do the search first, then post saying this is what I understand, from these websites; any one have alternative opinions?

And, by going through websites, you just might learn other things somewhat tangential to the original issue but pertinent, for example, to your concerns about your health.

9. There is a MAJOR body of high-quality work
Edited on Wed Apr-19-06 01:07 PM by Pigwidgeon
Edited to add "PFOA" to search key list

Key your search on PTFE PFOA Teflon xenoestrogen(-ic) carcinogen(-ic) teratogen(-ic). You may want to group them in groups of two or three at the most, and those will return only a smallish number of studies (under 500 in each search). Searching on most or all of the words at once returns a dozen, or even zero, hits.

This is a very tightly focused area of research, but it will be a very productive search.

PTFE is the chemical abbreviation for Teflon, Teflon-like compounds, and their byproducts. PFOA is a major chemical precursor.

27. Question: Why do I see two "Edited to" lines in your post? Is that...
...some sort of a new feature?

If for some odd reason you can't see it, under the red
"Edited on Wed Apr-19-06 02:07 PM by Pigwidgeon,"

you also have a second red line that says,
"Edited to add "PFOA" to search key list"

What's the deal? Is that new? Who and why did/do you do that?

Oh, and thanks for the info, your's was some of the most useful info posted.

17. From what I understand, it is when the Teflon becomes flaky, chipped off
and gets in your food.

To circumvent this possibility, I never use metal utensils on Teflon, and I never put it in the dishwasher, (wash by hand).

My mother was told that her Macaw should not be anywhere near the kitchen, (as a matter of fact, not even in the house), when she used her teflon coated pans. Apparently, they give off poisonous fumes, especially dangerous to birds.
