Tampa community debate "support our troops" sign

http://www.tampabaylive.com/stories/2006/04/060419sign.shtml

Soldier can't understand all the fuss over a sign

TAMPA - David Kelley returned home to his wife on Wednesday. The Tampa soldier touched down at TIA for a 15-day-long vacation with his wife Stacey. It was the first time the two had seen each other since November.

David had been very anxious to return home knowing the efforts his wife has making to show support for him and other troops. However, her patriotism has not sat well with others in her community.

Some in the couple's Westchase neighborhood believe Stacey's signs of support violate community rules. They want to see the "support our troops" posting taken down.

Now that her husband is home, he says he too will not let it come down.

"We fight and die for the flag and for our country," explained David. "Why make a big deal out of the support our troops sign? If it wasn't for what we do, the ones that are having an issue with this would not be allowed to have an issue."

1. It kind of sounds like they are objecting because of some HOA regs
(HOA = Homeowners Association).

HOA regs can really go overboard, imo. I had a friend who lived in Columbia MD who once had a lien put on her house because she painted it a "too bright" shade of yellow.

I don't see the problem with a support the troops sign as long as it's not the size of a billboard.

4. My subdivision regs
say NO yard signs of any kind, except for a single "for sale" sign of limited demensions.
I can understand the fuss over this. No signs means no signs. Read the regs before you move into a subdivision.

2. Let them keep the sign. Others should put up "Support Our Troops -
Bring Them Home!" signs on their property.

3. rules is rules...
if they won't let one person put up kitchy lawn art- why should they let others get away with those creepy "support the troops" signs...?

12. personally, i would NEVER live in an area with a "homeowner's association"
but for the people that choose to- they can run into LOTS of problems when they break those rules- including huge fines and even property liens.

6. the community offered to put up a large sign w/names off all residents
that are overseas in the war. The lady said, "no". I live near Tampa, and I used to live in Westchase. I would like to feel bad for her, but you should hear her on the news. She is a nut. She will take no reasonable compromise.

7. I disagree with David Kelley
Murdering people in the middle east has absolutely nothing to do with our freedoms here at home.

Having said that, I think they should be able to put up any sign they want.

8. it is in the rules that you can't. Westchase is famous for that
We all had to abide by them. There are plenty of homes for sale in areas w/no CCDs. She chose to live there.

9. I just think those types of rules are bullshit
that's why I would never live in a suburb full of snotty ass busy bodies.

That woman and her husband may be whack jobs for all I know, as well.

13. You have a point
If a person buys a home in a subdivision with HOA guidelines, they are obligated to abide by the rules. If neighborhood rules are a sore spot with a potential buyer, it's best to look elsewhere.
