Gulp! Try $4.50! - Brooklyn gas station floors it...
With pump prices rising fast, a gas station under the Brooklyn Bridge took a quantum leap into outrageousness - charging a jaw-dropping $4.50 a gallon!

That's what the Gulf Station on Old Fulton St. in Brooklyn Heights was charging credit card customers for a gallon of premium yesterday.

A gallon of regular gas was no bargain, either, at $4.14 for cash or $4.26 on plastic.
And how much in State-local-Fed taxes does the Government get out of this??

15. I have to disagree . . .
it didn't end. We're STILL paying outrageous energy bills -- they never went down and the FIRST thing Ahnie did was drop the lawsuits which was EXACTLY why he was brought in in the first place. That and the hopes that CA would turn Red in 2004.

6. Makes me wonder what the robber baron of Cambridge St
at the foot of Beacon Hill in Boston is charging. I remember he was the highest in the state during the multiple crises in the 70s, but it was the one place you could always get gas. The lines often stretched all the way downtown.

My oil insider buddy is no longer talking about $40/bbl prices in two years. He's talking of $100/bbl as not being out of the question within two years and the sky's the limit if Stupid starts shooting at Iran.

He's scared.

7. The poor guy who owns that does not get a bulk discount on his gas
His tanks are not big enough to buy enough gas at a time from his supplier to qualify for the bulk discount most stations get. He is not able to change out the tanks, I think because of cost.

Be nice to them.

9. Also, it's primarily a repair and service station.
There's no real incentive for him to change out the tanks,
it's not his main business.

18. How Gas Prices Work

How Gas Prices Work
by Kevin Bonsor and Ed Grabianowski

<snip>

Guzzling Gas in America
Americans have an insatiable thirst for gasoline, and with sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) continually growing in popularity we are only getting thirstier. Just look at the roads and highways and you'll see that a severe gas shortage would practically cripple the country. Americans drive more than 2.5 trillion miles per year in automobiles, light trucks and SUVs, according to a MEMA report. That's equal to 14,000 round trips to the sun. Today, we drive almost twice as much as we did in 1980 (1.5 trillion miles).

The United States consumes an average of 20 million barrels of oil per day (bbl/d, according to the Department of Energy. Of that, about 45 percent is used for motor gasoline. The rest is used for distillate fuel oil, jet fuel, residual fuel and other oils. Each barrel of oil contains 42 gallons (159 L), which yields 19 to 20 gallons (75 L) of gasoline. So, in the United States, something like 178 million gallons of gasoline is consumed every day.

Where Your Money Goes
When you pump $20 dollars into your tank, that money is broken up into little pieces that get distributed among several entities. Gas is just like any other consumer product: There's a supply chain and several groups who are responsible for setting the price of the product. The media can sometimes lead you to believe that the price of gas is based solely on the price of crude oil, but there are actually many factors that determine what you pay at the pump. No matter how expensive gas becomes, all of these entities have to get their slice of the pie.

The Toyota Prius gets up to 60 miles per gallon. That could cut your gas costs in half! And yet this four-door, Bluetooth-enabled coupe only costs around $20K. Click here to see it and get current prices

24. "We know it's expensive, but we don't have a choice," Borbee said.
Donald Borbee, co-manager of the station, said its prices were so high because the station's tanks are small, requiring numerous deliveries.

He added that the station functions primarily as an auto repair and service shop.

"We know it's expensive, but we don't have a choice," Borbee said.

As New Yorkers lashed out against the skyrocketing fuel prices yesterday, Sen. Chuck Schumer called for an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission to ensure that rising gas prices are not a result of corporate greed.

26. If I owned a gas station, I would charge more depending on the vehicle
You drive a Toyota Celica? $2.50 per gallon.
You drive a Hummer? $15.00 per gallon.
You drive a Prius? $2.00 per gallon.
You drive a moped? $1.00 per gallon.
You drive a Ford Excursion? $12.00 per gallon.

32. I don't think civil rights legislation extends to one's choice in vehicles
Insurance companies adjust their prices according to vehicle type, so why can't gas stations?

In fact, with prayer and therapy, Hummer drivers can be cured and taught to drive Hybrid vehicles.

34. Insurance companies are insuring a risk and replacement cost

They charge more for a new hybrid then they would for an old SUV.

Just curious, how much would you charge me in my 1988 Isuzu Trooper 4X4 that gets 8-11 mpg in the city?
