Bush: U.S. Must Compete With India, China
The Associated Press

TUSKEGEE, Ala. -- President Bush said Wednesday the nation needs to keep on the cutting edge in research in the face of growing competition over jobs and natural resources from India and China.

Bush singled out the world's two most populous nations one day before Chinese President Hu Jintao's scheduled visit to the White House. Bush noted that event and his recent trip to India.

"These countries are emerging nations," Bush said in a speech at Tuskegee University. "They are growing rapidly and they provide competition for jobs and natural resources.

"As these new jobs of the 21st century come into being, people are going to hire people with the skills set," he said. "And if our folks don't have the skill set, those jobs are going to go somewhere else."

11. I guess the fact that other countries basically have slave labor who work
for next to nothing makes no difference in Bush's book. What a simpleton this President is.

Americans have standard work laws that protect us, and prevent us from becoming slaves. China and other countries aren't even close to the same standards.

Jobs are going overseas because big corporate interests control our government, and can get away with it. The only real losers here are Americans. Except for the upper class and the corporations. This has nothing to do with our skill set. It has everything to do with a government that is corrupt and is no longer looking after what is best for America at large.

14. We need to teach our kids to live on 1/10th of their expectations
People in India get paid $2 or less for every $25 I make doing the same job I do. Fortunately for me, they do a crappy job, because English is not their first language, so they nipped the outsourcing in the bud. :joy:

However, they sent the jobs back with the caveat that our pay be cut exactly in half. :grumble:

31. Nope, but a comparable job. We work for PR departments, interviews etc.
It's really quite amusing (and kind of scary) how twisted around somebody's statements can be when they're filtered through a non-English speaking individual.

Granted, the PR pros and newsmen generally twist people's statements, but in a more controlled fashion.

Edited on Wed Apr-19-06 03:03 PM by Peanutcat
But he's right about that one. Musta gotten himself a better speechwriter or something. But the friggin' idiot forgot two things:

1. To have the best skill sets, you need the best education, and that costs money, which our educational system ain't getting,

and

2. It's not just having the proper skills. It doesn't matter if you have the proper skills for the job if your aren't going to get paid a good wage for them. Someone who has the exact same skills you do but who's willing to work for lesser pay will always get the jobs.

17. bullshit. We *have* the skill set.
We're training overseas workers and then they're taking our jobs. The problem is that big business is looking for someone who will do the work for a fraction of the price and no one is thinking about the long-term impact on our society and country. :grr:

20. Does "skills set" include belief in ID, Rapture, "killing" stem cells...
and all the other crap that supporters of this administration spew daily in their attack on the valid sciences? Our best researchers are being forced to go overseas to work because of "fundamental laws" passed here which restrict and outright condemn what those Americans who have dedicated their lives to applying intelligent "skill sets" to progressive ideas!

involves living in a cardboard box, learning to live with vermin and feed your family on $.32/hr...IF you can clean up enough to even get a job.

unless they were designing an atomic bomb they would outsource Einstein.Let's face the fact that Bush (who's IQ is estimated at 91 +/- 5 points (got that-at least sub par, possibly as low as 86!!!)) can serve as president with a basically null skill set, than don't tell me that most technolgical jobs couldn't be performed by someone in the USA with an IQ of 100....Follow the money-with these people all else is lies...

32. this is BS (not that I'd expect anything else)
my fiancee is a HIGHLY SKILLED computer programmer who hasn't had a job in programming since 2001.

A friend of ours works for a company that's outsourcing UNIX admin jobs to India...and none of the Indian admins know a thing about UNIX administration. The company hires them to do the work...based on falsified resumes and paid references...and it ends up costing them money (not that they're smart enough to figure that out yet...all they see is the pay rate difference)

34. They (TPTB) need to be very careful about how low they let it go
Hungry people will eat, no matter what they have to do. If they make it impossible to work and earn enough to live, raise kids and such, they make reactionary undertakings inevitable. Perhaps that's why they're working on these "crowd control" and "non-lethal" technologies, they know they're eventually going to have to put us down. :evilfrown:

Should we all be learning Chinese? And how are we to keep on the cutting edge in research, when we have an administration that doesn't support science? Does he think there'll be a demand for ID scientists?
