2. Indeed. We will be forced to invent a new energy supply. |
|
Or be forced to do without.

The rich and powerful will still ride around in gas hogs and jet around the world. The average person will go back to being a serf tied to the land. You don't need to travel farther than your Wal-Mart job and your Wal-Mart shopping. They don't want you to go anywhere on a plane. You might learn that life is better in other countries. More room in first class for them.

4. It's be nice if the money were going somewhere good. |
|
Denmark's got high gas prices. But they've also got one of the best public transportation systems in the world.
Where's our money going? Into the pockets of Bush supporters.

13. Sure, but if this leads to people actually conserving in the US.. |
|
as well as not buying oversized SUVS that never leave the pavement, that is just as good.
In addition, if people move off of oil, it's price will drop and so will the profits of the oil companies.

14. Have you ever noticed |
|
That gas prices take a spike a few months before every election? It's so us little people can pay for our own brainwashing. The money goes from our wallet to the oil companies to the Republican Party to their propaganda machine. And we're doing it again. It doesn't matter what the price of gas is. They can always get Fox news to say it's the fault of environmentalists and liberals. Works every time.

However, we/I am not set up to withstand the oil crash at this point in my life. The alternative energy infrastructure is thirty years behing schedule, and we are not yet ready to withstand the economic forces behind the oil collapse.

9. I'm not trying to belittle your economic hardships, but... |
|
are you prepared to deal with an environmental collapse?
Because if we keep pumping, dumping, polluting, and warming the earth that is what is coming and it will make any economic hardship look like a picnic.

22. Yes, exactly right, which is why high gas prices are great! |
|
Inexpensive gas/oil/energy are playing a big role in the environmental collapse, and the only way to get people to try a more environmentally friendly route is to make the current route too expensive.

24. your point is the interconnectedness of control |
|
And I understand and agree completely. Of course I eat and of course some of that food relies on fossil fuels for transportation. That is the astounding thing about the hegemonic control of the corporate oiligarchy -- even people who ditch their cars and do their best to stop contributing to the destruction of the planet cannot do so entirely because of the web of economic interconnection.
We MUST begin to wean ourselves away from the cult of the car. It has to start somewhere; it has to start somehow. What better place than here? What better time than now?
