When Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay met with the U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington to discuss security, border control and softwood lumber concerns, we were shocked to hear him declare that he is a "fan" of hers.
MacKay should not assume the Canadians he represents view the secretary of state of the George W. Bush administration in this way. We consider the expression of his personal viewpoint to be singularly inappropriate.

I hope all Canadians got a full dose of Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay's fawning, obsequious drooling over U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. It's nice that he has followed her career so closely.
What a shame he hasn't followed Canada and Canadian values as assiduously.
If he had, he might have understood that the reason he attracted the "A" team to his Washington visit is that the George W. Bush administration now has in Ottawa an obedient prime minister who went on the record in favour of sending Canadian troops to Iraq and of joining the U.S. Missile Defence, two initiatives an overwhelming majority of Canadians oppose.
That overwhelming majority dwarfs the 36 per cent support the Conservatives currently enjoy. MacKay humiliates himself and diminishes Canada with his childish hero-worship in foreign lands.
