Orangeburg audience hears about immigration reform proposals

ORANGEBURG — The crowd of approximately 30 people who gathered at Dominican College's Hennessy Center last night to hear about proposed immigration changes favored a proposal that would legalize the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S.

The gathering, which included county residents, students and activists, urged the general public to get involved in the process.

Vicky Cohen, an immigration attorney, reminded people that most families were composed of legal immigrants, American citizens and others with various immigration statuses. Penalties assessed against one person would have a wide impact. snip

Others were alarmed to learn that plans were well under way to build temporary immigration detention centers across the nation.

The $385 million contract has been awarded to a subsidiary of the Halliburton corporation, an engineering and defense contractor.

Didn't Hitler build some kind of detention centers all over Germany too?

3. Here's a list

The first Nazi camps were within Germany, and were primarily labor camps.

Concentration camps dated from the beginning of Nazi rule in Germany in 1933. The Nazis set up concentration camps within Germany, many of which were established by local authorities, to hold political prisoners and undesirables. These early concentration camps were eventually consolidated into centrally-run camps, and by 1939, six large concentration camps had been established: Dachau (1933), Sachsenhausen (1936), Buchenwald (1937), Flossenbürg (1938), Mauthausen (1938) and Ravensbrück (1939).

In 1938, the SS began to use the camps for forced labor at a profit. Many German companies used forced labor from these camps, especially during the subsequent war.

4. Can't think of too many things that cost $385 million that
I would call "temporary"...accept maybe large amounts of ordinance; and the cost for that is tallied in its long term damage.
