How does a person alert the moderators?
Some of the responses to the rape threads here on DU are getting very close to creating an environment that can cause psychological harm to rape victims. Given the number of rape victims here as evidenced by a poll someone else posted, I think the moderators need to get on this issue a little more aggressively. Revictimization is almost as hard on a woman who's been raped as the rape itself.

I've been able to handle the grief I've gotten in threads thus far, but I'm concerned about other women victims who might be struggling with this issue more than I am at present. It can make a woman very fragile psychologically, and the attacks against victims can cause her harm!

I'm very serious, Moderators! Something needs to be done about the replies to these rape threads because victims of rape who are posting on DU are being harmed by being forced to read these replies before they can put the poster on ignore or hide the thread!

I'm very sorry to see that the rights of women are not supported on a supposedly progressive board. Sometimes I think we've barely crawled out of the cave...!

1. Can I suggest a moratorium on the whole line of threads?
They're getting out of hand, clearly.

6. Click the "alert"
in the lower bottom corner of the objectionable post.

Life becomes a lot easier when you reconcile yourself to the fact that "progressive" men, like men in general, don't always have women's well-being at the top of their list.

8. Can you point to some examples
I'm not a moderator - but my general thought about this sort of request is that this is a discussion board full of passionate opinionated people. People have different opinions, and people sometimes express them in aggressive ways (I do this myself on occasion).

19. I've already put most on ignore, so I can't point them out.
The problem here is that women who have been raped (which the poll indicates we have a large number of posting here on DU) are already psychologically damaged by the experience. Some can handle the crap being handed out without a problem. There are others that might not be able to handle it psychologically, and they're pretty much forced to read the threads and the replies in order to put the person on ignore or hide the thread.

While I support the rights of free speech and all that, I think some sensitivity toward victims (of whom we have a quantity here) is required when posting. That may not be very palatable to some folks, but the alternative is causing a victim even more pain and suffering. For me, that's unacceptable. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I guess I'm also asking DUers to think before they post, because it's very likely an actual, real victim of rape is reading your post.

Asking for sensitivity towards the feelings of women around here is a lost fucking cause.

Has it really gotten that bad?

By the sounds of it I think I'd better continue to avoid those threads!

I haven't read all the threads, but I've read a lot of them. Can you offer up an example of what kind of post you are talking about?

Come on. You see something. Click it. A window opens. Explain the alert. Press send.

Go do it on EVERY post you find on the line so they know.

13. just click the "alert" link, lower left of the post you wish to alert
if you have a concern regarding a topic more global than one particular post, you can either alert one representative post, or send du private mail to the forum moderators.

either way, you have the opportunity to explain your concerns.

However before you call the cops you really should take a deep breath and consider the possibility that you are overreacting. I personally prefer IGNORE over ALERT. I also believe that within free and open debate the truth will prevail.

18. Bottom left
I don't read the Duke rape threads and I have read only a few of the generic rape discussion threads. It is inevitable that these discussions on a board like this degenerate into bloviating, name calling, misunderstanding and intolerance.
