I've got a dumb question about Louisiana elections...

Election Day in Louisiana is November 7, same as everywhere else. But that date is also primary election day in Louisiana.

How does that work?

Voter Registration Deadline for Primary Election: October 09, 2006
Congressional Primary Date: November 07, 2006

Congressional Run-Off Election Dates (if needed)
Voter Registration Deadline for Run-Off Election: November 08, 2006
Run-Off Election Date: December 09, 2006

has an open primary system -- parties do not select their candidates, but rather every candidate is on the ballot on Nov 7.

If no candidate recieves 50%+1 of the vote, the top two have a run-off. This is true for all elections in the state (not sure for US President, but is true for Congress/Senate).
