166. NOT a rube. A produce of our most prestigious private schools.
His grandfather was a senator. His father was head of the CIA, Vice President, and President.

If he were raised in the hills by illiterate first cousins who kept him locked in the barn, I could understand this, but he was ALWAYS in contact with knowledge, power, and the protocols of power.

and the Australian PM placed his hand at the small of her back as he was showing her something or introducing her to someone. A modest gesture that we in this country wouldnt think of to harshly at all. The British press however had a field day with that one.

HANDS OFF HER! were indicative of the headlines. They saw it as VERY rude.

51. true enough
and i can say that grabbing the man was prolly one of the worse scenarios that exist. Let me think of a few worse ones....

He could have shouted 'Hey, it's these stairs idiot!'

he could have stood there and shook his head as if Hu were dumb.

he could have raised his hands and looked to the sky as if asking of god 'why do i have to deal with this dumb man'

sorry bout that, but grabbing him is i guess a little better than these... course all the above scenarios are aplicable to * himself (i am remembering his wrong door incident. - maybe he secretly was wishing that someone would have grabbed him before he made a fool of himself in that situation.)

Or i just thought that maybe that is how he is used to being handled by ROVE. hahahaha

106. I bet Bush does have to be pushed in the right direction himself
It probably never occurred to him that it looks bad on film. However, even if he did mean well (though somehow I doubt President Hu is so dimwitted as to walk into a wall, or the White House fountain) -- there must have been more graceful ways to handle it.

I like FlaGranny's solution -- even if Bush did end up following him the wrong way, putting oneself in the same situation as one's guests is a pleasant gesture, and looks better than a public correction. (One of my European neighbours, when having us over for tea, would always "let" the teapot dribble if she noticed her guests having trouble pouring ... so people wouldn't feel awkward.)

A very good rule when acting as a selected president would be to never lay your hand on another person.

This looks very tacky and remember the whole world is watching the fool.

ASSHOLE: So you're one of these egg-head engineer types. What type of choo-choo train do you drive?

HU: Actually, Mr. President, I'm a hydraulic engineer and helped develop several of Sinohydro's procedures to bring electricity to our rural lands.

ASSHOLE: Well, HUge, you would've had a lot more laughs driving the choo-choo (laughs).

HU: (Stares with barely restrained contempt at the obvious incarnation of a chimp into human form).

ASSHOLE: I'm just busting your balls, Huge.

HU: (In perfect Mandarin to one of his aides) Call in our debt and take me from the presence of this small dog.

53. All of China is watching to see how America treats its leader -
whether as an equal or otherwise. How the heck do we explain that in grabbing President Hu like this Bush is indeed treating the Chinese president just like he would treat any other world leader - disrespectfully. The Chinese that I work with and know are reserved in terms of physical touch with people they do not know or work with. Although it is changing, in China you tend not to shake hands in a business situation. You and they offer business cards to each other, with a small bow. And you are supposed to accept their card with both hands. One hand is considered rude. This is how a Chinese (or any other nationality you care to name) grandmother would correct her grandchild. As someone up the list said, if Bush had a clue or cared about diplomacy, heck, let's just say good manners, he would have followed Hu down the wrong steps and then they could have both walked to the other side of the podium. Oy - 3 more years of this.

87. go ahead monkey boy, p*ss off China's president
here is an indepth article about the tensions between the U.S. and China

Containing China
Despite Bush's preoccupation with Iraq and Iran, the administration is more concerned with keeping China from becoming an economic and military superpower.

snip to latter part of the article...

According to the Pentagon, the task of countering future Chinese military capabilities largely entails the development, and then procurement, of major weapons systems that would ensure U.S. success in any full-scale military confrontation. "The United States will develop capabilities that would present any adversary with complex and multidimensional challenges and complicate its offensive planning efforts," the QDR explains. These include the steady enhancement of such "enduring U.S. advantages" as "long-range strike, stealth, operational maneuver and sustainment of air, sea, and ground forces at strategic distances, air dominance, and undersea warfare."

Preparing for war with China, in other words, is to be the future cash cow for the giant U.S. weapons-making corporations in the military-industrial complex. It will, for instance, be the primary justification for the acquisition of costly new weapons systems such as the F-22A Raptor air-superiority fighter, the multi-service Joint Strike Fighter, the DDX destroyer, the Virginia-class nuclear attack submarine, and a new, intercontinental penetrating bomber -- weapons that would just have utility in an all-out encounter with another great-power adversary of a sort that only China might someday become.

In addition to these weapons programs, the QDR also calls for a stiffening of present U.S. combat forces in Asia and the Pacific, with a particular emphasis on the Navy (the arm of the military least utilized in the ongoing occupation of and war in Iraq). "The fleet will have greater presence in the Pacific Ocean," the document notes. To achieve this, "The Navy plans to adjust its force posture and basing to provide at least six operationally available and sustainable carriers and 60 percent of its submarines in the Pacific to support engagement, presence and deterrence."

161. from what I know about China
I'm pretty sure this would be seen as rude in a public setting. I think you'd let Hu fall on his face before you'd grab his suit jacket. But like you say in China there are a lot of shades of gray in insults. Let us know if it's one of those unforgiveable ones.

Please don't go to war."

154. Georgie violates every cultural moray of every single event he
attends. Remember his body language during Coretta Scott King's funeral? Slouched, bored, slumped in his chair, chatting with Laura. Jeez, get some manners and some class! It's bad enough we are subjected to his mangling the English language and watching his brain synapses work overtime to fire together, but he can't seem to "get" the decorum of the office.

Or Keith on Countdown? Or anyone in the mainstream media?
Did this happen before or after Scottie's resignation?
Can someone start a new website "China,we're really sorry for his incredibly rude manners, but we didn't vote for him, and many of us over here are really fearful for our lives even before his total lack of decorum with you. Please don't hate us." (normally, I don't write such run on sentences).
