5. He was also yakking about the Chinese experiencing "freedom"
Through the non-Marxist, pro-capitalist reforms of the Chinese government.

Capitalism first, democracy when the oligarchs get around to it.

"I'm the great Decider"
"If you kids don't get necessary skills, your future jobs will go to China and India."
"I don't support Independence for Taiwan"

All in one week.

Is that like in the Guinness Book of World Stupid yet? The Most Idiotic Statements by a World Leader in a Given Period?

8. Why, you want a war?
The US (and the entire Western World) has been opposed to the independance of Taiwan since the PRC was formed in 1949. Nothing new here.

6. Somebody should tell this to the Christian Coaltion and Moral Majority --
This was the great big excuse why Falwell and Robertson, et al., opposed Jimmy Carter. They said Carter was turning his back on Taiwan and that God wanted Taiwan free and separate from atheist Red China.

At the Republican Convention in 1980, which I remember vividly, the so-called Christian leaders (aka Republican operatives posing as Christians) opposed Jimmy Carter all because Carter wouldn't agree to go to war with China over Taiwan.

What a laugh these ass-clowns are. How do they sleep?

11. I know! An independent Taiwan has
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 11:20 AM by OKNancy
been a Republican mantra forever.
Some Republicans are going to be pissed about this.
Me, I'm going to sit back and watch the fireworks.

Edit: guess I was wrong: from the 2000 Republican platform

Will not allow China to attack Taiwan

China is not a free society. We support China’s accession into the WTO, but this will not be a substitute for our pursuit of improved human rights and an end to proliferation of dangerous technologies. A Republican president will honor our promises to the people of Taiwan. America has acknowledged the view that there is one China. Our policy is based on the principle that there must be no use of force by China against Taiwan. If China attacks Taiwan, America will help Taiwan defend itself.

10. Hasn't every president since Nixon sidestepped this question?
Usually they say something about all sides coming to a peacful resolution, or other diplomatic non-statement.

So if we now clearly don't support Taiwan independence, why should we deter China from retaking it by force?

12. Taiwan Relations Act of 1979 codifies this position.
The USA doesn't recognize Taiwan, it recognizes China, but the USA will defend
Taiwan from invasion.

Status quo. There's a lot more $ to be made from mainland China.
