CNN: People are Pawning Their Rims to Pay for Gas
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 02:29 PM by FLDem5
They interviewed a man who cuts lawns for a living who had to sell one of his lawn mowers for gas money.

Wow. It is really beginning to hit home.

The poor are getting poorer and giving up small luxuries for necessities. You should have seen the clip - jewelry, small appliances, boom boxes.

How sad. If the oil companies were cutting their bonuses in a real effort to help curb costs to the consumer, I would feel it was just the way it is. But they're not.

How about those record profits now? Still feel good about those huge bonuses?

Greedy pigs.

And as prices continue to climb, more and more people who are barely getting by now will start to suffer.

28. I'm supposed to move south in 3 weeks
My son was coming up to help me move my camper back down to Biloxi. I have to pay gas for two vehicles, one of which will be pulling my 18' camper. I don't know if I can afford to move now with the gas prices so high. It's gonna take a chunk out of my moving in and getting settled money.

7. Taxes on the very wealthy MUST be raised, and raised a LOT
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 02:46 PM by Atman
Which Bush knows, too. In the meantime, those millions they've "saved" are earning them more millions in interest, and when the Dems move in to do what must be done, the talking heads will be on all the news shows saying "SEE! As soon as the Democrats get in charge, what's the first thing they do? Raise your taxes!"

I hope Dean and the Democratic leadership are strategizing for this eventuality, and are prepared to shut down the mofo's when they try this shit.

10. Well, hang on, it's going to get worse, much worse
This is why the rich and well off don't really care one way or the other about the economy. To them, a recession or better yet a depression is nothing more than a buying opportunity.

"Can't you understand what's happening here? Don't you see what's happening? Potter isn't selling. Potter's buying! And why? Because we're panicky and he's not. That's why. He's picking up some bargains. Now, we can get through this thing all right. We've got to stick together, though. We've got to have faith in each other"

12. The guy interviewed didn't give up a small luxury for a necessity...
...he gave up a necessity for a necessity. As far as the economy is concerned, this should be sounding alarm bells like nothing else has in a long, long time. This is not sustainable. We are going to crash.

14. We have a van, which I go to town in once a week to buy groceries
and pick up other articles. It is used for hauling and longer trips. We'll keep it because it's paid for and if we ever lose our home, we can sleep in it and haul a few bits of clothing and memories around in it. It is our second vehicle, our first is an 18 year old Corolla which needs to make it until I can locate work, but has high miles on it and is good on gas still. Well, I went to fill the tank on the Town & Country (a 6 cylinder), which I do once a month. It cost me almost $55 to do so. Our Corolla is running about $30/week now too. I remember filling that tank for $10 during the 1990s.

24. Simply capitalism in action:
infinite greed disguised as ultimate virtue and the division of all humanity into two classes: rulers and victims. Nothing more, nothing less -- and absolutely predictable.

Also -- though it's far too late -- the resurrection of Marxism.

35. Drove by the local gas station this morning and
it was too crowded with people waiting in line to get to the pumps(gas at $2.95, so I thought I would stop for gas on the way back from my other chores. Gas went up 4 cents to $2.99 within the hour. I drive a 1990 Geo Prizm which gets very good gas mileage. I feel sorry for those who are filling up their SUVs.

Is it a choice of buying groceries, paying the bills, or filling up the tank?
