Pew Releases Enormous Public Survey
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 03:06 PM by AGENDA21
Pew has just dropped a motherload of polling data of their website. It covers just about everything going on in the political world right now. Bush is at 35-55%. Dems lead the generic ballot 51-41, thanks entirely to a whopping 20-point lead among Independents. There is a rising anti-incumbent mood, but still not at 1994 levels. Democrats lead on ethics reform, but the country is cynical on that matter. Bush fatigue is rising. Opinions on Iraq are stable, and Iraq remains the number one story for people. Democrats are also favored on immigration, but by a plurality, not a majority. Third-party opinions remain stable, and on and on and on.

I could look at a report like this all day, but I want to reproduce here three charts from the report summary that I thought were particularly interesting.

9. The Clinton and Biden numbers seem too high. Why isn't Gore on the list?
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 04:00 PM by BrklynLiberal
Repukes prefer Condaleeza to McCain? Guliani on top? Really weird stuff.

I guess I cannot put my finger on exactly what it is, but it just doesn't ring true.

The %ages don't add up to 100 no matter how you add them up, so what do those numbers actually represent?

12. Guliani has had mainly nothing but favorable coverage since 9/11
that is why he rates well not only in this poll but other polls. In a campaign when Republicans get more aware of his liberal attitudes on abortion and other issues he will lose ground with them. And when his private life is made an issue (and Frist and some of the others will make it an issue) he will have to deal with that.

14. they aren't supposed to add up to 100%
they just show the perctentge of people who gave them "favourable" ratings- i'm guessing that respondents were given a list, and asked if they view each candidate as "favourable" or "unfavourable"...or something to that effect.

6. Oliphant was on Franken today, discussint the Harris poll which
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 03:20 PM by Gloria
has only a 6 pt generic spread between Dems and Repugs. They acknowledged the other polling showing a bigger spread. But Oliphant says it's a warning that Democrats shouldn't assume they'll win either House in November, in spite of the anti-Bush sentiment.

Democrats have to sharpen their message and look a lot more assertive as the campaigning gets under way full throttle, IMOP.
