Man burned in FEMA trailer explosion dies
http://www.nola.com/newslogs/tpupdates/index.ssf?/mtlogs/nola_tpupdates/archives/2006_04_20.html#133161
A Slidell man whose FEMA trailer sprung a propane leak and exploded last week died Wednesday, after a six-day struggle with severe burns and associated injuries sustained in the blast.

John Meyer, 49, was flown to a burn unit at Baton Rouge General Medical shortly after the accident, where he remained until his death.

In addition to second- and third-degree burns over much of his body, family members said the explosion had caused irreparable damage to his heart, liver and kidneys, leading to organ failure.

For the past four months, Meyer had been living with his wife, Linda, in a FEMA-supplied Palomino-brand travel camper on Ulloa Road in Slidell. Their former residence, also a mobile home, had been twisted off its blocks and flooded by Hurricane Katrina in August.

6. Yeah, ain't it great.
I don't use my stove or the heater at all in the femansion - just for this reason. :scared:

I use the propane to heat the water in the little ole 5 gallon hot water tank.

My fears are fires in these little tin cans or the winds just tossing them around.

RIP Mr. Meyer - may loving memories give comfort to your family. :(

8. How close to the mansion is the tank?
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 04:43 PM by sfexpat2000
When I stayed on the ranch in the Airstream, I refused to use gas at all. I used electricity even if it was a pain.

:scared:

10. Two large tanks are attacked to the front of the trailer, near the
pulling hitch. You know, right next to the bed. :freak:

How the hell am I supposed to use electricity to heat the water in a water heater fueled by propane?

13. Hi merh, propane sinks and smells
Propane sinks, so it seeks the lowest place to collect. Drill a hole in the door (or somewhere) close to the floor, so if any propane escapes it has a place to leak out from. (just don't tell FEMA) I lived in a travel trailer for yrs, door didn't fit so there was a place for it to leak out if it leaked, which I don't know that it ever did. Propane has no natural scent, so they add (?) which is comperable to garlic to give it that distinctive smell.
