Gwinnett Mom: 'Ban Harry Potter'
Gwinnett County parent is waging a war against Harry Potter. She says the popular book series should be pulled from libraries in the state’s largest school district.

Laura Mallory says the Potter books take kids to dark places.

“The books are indoctrinating children into witchcraft,” Mallory said. “It’s not mere fantasy.”

Mallory has three children attending J.C. Magill Elementary School in Loganville, and is asking the school board to banish the books.

“I’m asking that they be removed from the school -- elementary school in particular -- because the young children are not as able to discern as older children,” said Mallory.

Another parent, Amy Pryor, says the Harry Potter series got her daughter excited about reading....

------------

This is here in Atlanta, and the School Board Hearing is tonight. Hope that fascist loses. These people are nuts, always wanting to control everything. Banning books sounds like the Christan thing to do. Makes me think about Jesus - What books would Jesus ban. Maybe she will have a book burning party at her house after the meeting. I believe some folks in Germany liked to do that - circa 1930's. Make sure you put on your Sunday best Brown Shirt for the book burning party. Wouldn't be right to put on a wrinkled shirt.

1. On a related note: the lady has not read the books
http://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/index.php?s=&url_channel_id=32&url_article_id=14074&url_subchannel_id=&change_well_id=2

Mallory said she has been contacted by other Christian parents who were concerned about the content of the books. On her complaint form, she suggested they be replaced by C.S. Lewis’s “Chronicles of Narnia” series or Tim LaHaye’s “Left Behind: the Kids” series.

She admitted that she has not read the book series partially because “they’re really very long and I have four kids.”

“I’ve put a lot of work into what I’ve studied and read. I think it would be hypocritical for me to read all the books, honestly. I don’t agree with what’s in them. I don’t have to read an entire pornographic magazine to know it’s obscene,” Mallory said.

5. Tim LaHaye’s “Left Behind: the Kids” series.
Now this is the one that SHOULD be banned from the library. Sick, twisted and self destructive material not suitable for children.

16. Absolutely!
Kids will be jumping right out of their beds eagerly in the morning to go to school once they learn ... THE WORLD IS GOING TO END SOON! Very motivational ...

20. "they’re really very long"
That excuse does not hold water. An adult with good reading skills should be able to go at the pace of 15min/chapter. It is EASY READING. That would give her 2-4 days per book depending on how much time she has if she really wants to get up to speed on the material.

33. Chronicles of Narnia
Yes, I'm aware of the Christian allegory in these books. But has any kid ever become more of a Christian as a result of reading them? The backwards Christians like to trumpet these as some kind of Harry Potter for people who love Jesus, but the allegory is subtle enough that kids are more likely to go around worshipping lions than Jesus.

34. I never saw the books as blatantly religious
I recognized the christian symbols and parallels, but as a kid the books never really encouraged me to go to church more, or to evangelize. They were just fun fantasy books that inspired me to read more. Even as a kid, it's hard to derive serious life-altering messages from books with talking animals and dwarves.

"The Screwtape Letters" is probably more likely than the Narnia books to encourage people to actually become more religious, and I would not recommend that for young readers.

2. Yes- please give these people as much coverage as possible.
Harry Potter is incredibly popular, as are most other things the relgiously insane choose to attack. If people have to choose between Harry Potter and some frothing-at-the-mouth theocracy fan, I expect they'll choose Mr. Potter.

4. Oh, effing great...
I just got done reading the series last week...the woman protesting is "living in fantasy land"....

The series is good, and I would let anyone, kid, teenager, adult read the series...Funny though, they tried banning the series here in Mcdonald County a few years back, i don't remember the specifics, but i'm sure my wife would recall them perfectly....:)

23. Teehee.
Long while back I was picking up some H.P. collector cards, along with several other customers, when this woman walks by and exclaims, "You're all going to hell. H.P. is the devil's work"

We turned - stared - and then this man standing near me said, "It's a Death Eater!" We all laughed.

9. Oh yeah, kids reading fantasy books is a danger to our society.
I mean... it might actually teach them to think! And have an imagination!

To quote Bart Simpson: "Damn TV, you've ruined my imagination. Just like you ruined my ability to um.......... uh.............."

21. True story that I wish I could ban--
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 05:24 PM by bliss_eternal
of a fundie family. They were planning to decorate their kid's room in a Harry Potter theme. After the wife read the book, she didn't think they should. Because a character drank unicorn blood. Dh and I were shocked. They went on to say, those aren't the "moral values" they felt they should encourage in their kids. :wtf:

:banghead: People, get a fucking clue! It's a goddamned fantasy! Not everything is or should be based on something that really happened...you know, like your precious Chronicles of Narnia.

I still can't believe the hypocrisy. Harry Potter is evil and must be destroyed, yet it's ok to entertain the fantasies of the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, the existence of weapons of mass destruction and bush as president. :puke:

27. I know--
I don't get why anyone couldn't frame the fantasy situation of a book's villain as such. Instead of thinking a fictional situation is enough to deem anyone that likes or enjoys the book has bad morals.

I wish I could have 'banned' the existence of people like this, was what I meant by meant by my post. Not that I'm calling for a ban of the book--see my other posts on this thread. :)

28. Ah yes, here we go again.
Meanwhile (and no offense to Christians, honestly), the Bible teaches kids that a man existed who could turn one loaf of bread and one fish into thousands, raise the dead, and walk on water.

These turds need to turn around and scurry back into the shithole they came from.

in a nice country home for a very long time, the bitch. If you don't want your fundie kids to read the books, then keep them from them, don't try to control anyone ELSE'S children or reading habits. What a fucking bitch.

Sorry--I get royally pissed off at people who try to control others' lives.

And down will come baby, cradle and all.
