MILLVILLE -- As the panel opens its long-awaited disciplinary hearing against suspended Police Chief Timothy P. Ryan tonight, the Board of Selectmen will be smarting from a self-inflicted political wound.


Erroneously believing the cable TV camera had been turned off after a regular meeting on Tuesday night, selectmen were observed by viewers in their homes joking about the Ryan case and mocking their critics as "natives" and "hate mail" authors.


Perhaps most damaging, at least in the eyes of Chief Ryan’s lawyers and supporters, were comments from Selectman Brian Dicks. He was heard rejecting the notion of trying the case against Ryan in a neutral forum such as arbitration because he favors merging the Police Department with law enforcement agencies in one or more neighboring towns.

"I wanna regionalize it," Dicks says. Then, likening Ryan to an unwanted tenant in one of the apartments Dicks used to manage, the selectman adds, "I’d give you some money, shut you up and get you out of the house."
