1. not stupid at all -
I'm pretty sure FL law prevents a candidate from running for more than one office at a time. (Don't quote me, I could be wrong)

Her house seat is listed as an open seat this fall. So - no, she's not running for re-election.

There's a very good chance she'll be 'spending more time with her family' come November.
Everybody say "awwwwww.'

2. I don't think you can do that.
If your term is not up in the house, you can retain your seat until the election. If you lose, you still have your house seat. If you win, you resign your house seat.

Remember Edwards. He was up for reelection and had to resign his seat in order to run for the VP. Kerry was not up for reelection, therefore he retained his seat.

5. Edwards didn't resign his seat, he just chose not to run for re-election..
Also, remember back in 2000, Lieberman ran for VP and Senate re-election at the same time.

I think it must be a state-by-state thing.

8. Also Remember, Edwards and Lieberman Were/Are Senators...
...entirely different animal. First of all, most states allow the governor to fill a vacated Senate seat via appointment for part or all of the remaining term. A House seat, on the other hand, is constitutionally bound to be filled via election only.

9. Correct, it's up to the state
Some states allow a person to run for more than one office at a time; others don't. For example, in 1960 LBJ ran for re-election to the Senate at the same time he was JFK's running mate. (The law in Texas has since been changed.)

In the 1930's Huey Long was able to be a US Senator while concurrently remaining governor of Louisiana.

7. House has elections every 2 yesrs. Senate every 6.
If you run for the Senate you can only keep the Rep job until the first of the year. Win or lose. She will no longer be the rep after the next election.

4. I can tell you she's running as the incumbent.
2006 Candidates:
(2006 Primary) (D)
Katherine Harris (R-incumbent)

I'm working for Jan Schneider because she is the best person for Florida's 13th and she has the best chance to win in November. She's right on the issues we all care about. She's got the political savvy to get the job done for the people in her district.

I found this info on Fla. Dist 13 web site.

http://www.ourcongress.org/race/fl13

ow it works, I don't know. I know Fl. law says you cannot hold more than one office when they overlap, and I think i's a safe bet that she's NOT going to win the Senate race! But IF a candidate were in the same position as KH and actually won the Senate race, she would have to resign her House seat. How she would be replaced, I have no idea. Probably Gov. appointment.

6. For All Practical Purposes, She Can't Run
She would have to run two campaigns (as her House seat is up for election this year also). She only has one dead dad, and therefore only one $10M check to burn on a campaign, so I wouldn't think she's running for both...

I guess Florida law could allow it, but why would they? On the off chance she wins both seats, there would still have to be a special election to fill her House seat. Who'd want to spend the extra time and effort to do that when we can just watch Bill Nelson put a foot in her ass in November and be done with it...?

10. Apparently she's been trying to "Mrs. Robinson" her way to victory - rofl!
http://www.majorityreportradio.com/weblog/archives/003989.php

So I guess it's not so much that she's running for her house seat as it is that she's running for anyone's seat she can grab! What a.... words are starting to fail me... and that's sayin somethin' - lol

12. AFAIK, no she can't run in both races
A candidate has to declare which primary they're running in. I believe May 18 is the deadline for Florida. Which is why many DUers say things like "Hang in there Katherine! At least until May 18!"

After that point, she's stuck in the Senate race, and certain defeat in November by the Dem incumbent.

And then she'll be $10 million poorer.

And unemployed.

 <-- crocodile tears
