How does your car do on gas?
Since Monday, I've left the house a total of four times. It's a new record for me considering errands and chauffering. The car needed 6.7 gallons of gas which cost $19.

It's a '94 Buick Regal and gets around 23-24 mpg.

We've considered buying a new car, but decided against it. Factoring in gas prices, car payments, extra insurance, plus a soon-to-be 16 yr. old, it's prudent for us to stick with this very reliable older car.

BTW, it's got 169,000 miles on it and still runs like a charm :)

I'll get about 270 miles on a tank when I'm commuting regularly. It doesn't cost that much to fill it up but I fill up about twice a week when I work. That's not good times

36. I admire your courage in posting that
Some might call your Trooper an . . . SUV

As long as you went first, I'll just say that once I got 16 on the highway in the Land Cruiser. Otherwise it's a bit less. But what it does, it does well.

That rate of consumption is more than balanced out by a very nice 4 cylinder Infinity/Nissan that gets around 30 mpg. Guess which one I drive more often these days?

49. dude with current gas prices...
you would save a BUTT LOAD of money. doing the math and assuming you will have the car for 10 years... you would save something like 9k in gas(this is for me, it varies depending on how much you drive), and this not taking into account the fact that gas prices will rise.

At anyrate I payed 21k for mine after I traded in my old car and got a 5 year loan, but my old car got 20mpg tops and now I'm getting 48-51mpg per tank. So all things considered I'll be paying alot less, especcially if gas prices continue to increase :-P

7. I sold the SUV in '02
And bought a little Mazda. Great mileage! Most of my driving is freeway traffic and I get about 30mpg even in stop and go.

I used to fill up the SUV twice, sometimes three times a week... and it had a much bigger tank. I fill up once a week now.

The SUV served it's purpose... hauling kids, band equipment, camping gear... kids are grown with cars of their own.

Highway when driving at about 100 KPH (60 MPH)

About 2/3 of that in the city or at top Autobahn speed, which I never do.

It's a 2003 BWM 525 stick shift, with virtually no extras.

The 75€ (or more) bill to fill up (closing in on $100) is getting a little pricey.

26. That's the idea!
Everyday when I'm on my way home from work, I look at the streams of commuters in various cars, SUVs, etc...Almost all have only a single passenger. Half of them are driving less than 10 miles each way. If just half of THEM just switched to scooters on nice enough days, we'd save a LOT of gas, emit a lot less CO2, and there'd be more parking for everyone.

We do also have a car -- gets really crappy mileage, actually. It's a Caprice state police intercepter with a `vette engine (it only cost $50 because it's an old taxicab with about 305,000 miles on it). We drive it only about once every week or less, because we only use it for major food shopping, hauling stuff, etc... We filled the gas tank last October, and it's on about 1/4 tank now. Same tank of gas.

I don't think many people could switch to a scooter full time, all the time, though maybe with sidecar and/or a very small family...

...Or an excellent sense of balance...

But most of the time, most of the people on the road are all by themselves. At those times, they should really think about scooters.

drive a truck and a full size van. Had a little tracer that got in the 20's but the roads (rock and dirt) killed it - one of those "cons" to country living - one year tires, no matter what you spend and heavy gas guzzler vehicles (and even they all squeek and drop parts). Bleh - let's go back to hay burners and once a month trips to town!

34. We have two cars, one much better on gas than the other
2002 Saturn - we bought it ourselves in part because of the gas prices. We bought it shortly after September 11, (correctly) assuming that gas prices were gonna get much worse. Even now with gas being about $3 a gallon, I can still fill it for about $26. It gets 27 mpg city/37 highway. Of course, I don't want to think about the fact that I could fill it for $10 when I bought it, because that makes me feel a little nauseated...

Other car is a '98 Monte Carlo, a hand-me-down gift from my parents. It gets worse gas mileage and it's costing about $35 to fill it now, but nowhere near as bad on gas as a SUV. I think it gets about 23 city/30 highway. That's mostly because it's a 6-cyl engine. But it also needs repairs a lot less often than the Saturn. Both have around 95K miles on them.

I LOVE my car!! It's a joy to drive and I don't have to fill up much! My hubby has to drive a mini-van for both of his jobs, no way around that... better gas mileage than a truck or SUV or traditional van, but still.. (BTW some jerk hit my car the other day, and bent the back end up requiring probably 1k in repairs.. didn't leave a note or wait until I came back to my car to tell me.. now I'm left holding the bag. WHy are people so mean?? Why does that person want ME to pay for THEIR mistake? If they don't have insurance they shouldn't be driving at all. I put a Fairly overdrive and larger wheels on the Landy, which gave me a top speed of about 55 mph. However, it still sucked the petrol. And it had a very small gas tank (12 gals, if I remember correctly).

BTW: Have you seen the new Toyota FJ Cruiser? I saw one on the road last week.

I'm lucky enough that I don't drive her more then 5 miles a day. My job is just up the street if I didn't work grave yard shift I'd be walking to work.

I don't' know if it was foolish choice or not just yet. But we just bought this vehicle 2 months ago.
I had a Van (ford windstar) that was incredibly unreliable! That we spent 5k on not more then 3 years ago that is already belly up on us, even with the small amount of miles I put on it in 3.5 years (just 12k with trips to NH twice a year)

My husband and I wanted to purchase something that would last, but like everyone we are strapped for cash these days. We wanted a Subaru, or a Toyota honda but were having a hard time finding one in our min price range of 5k with less then 100k miles.

So given the circumstances we opted to buy this Jeep for 4k since I only drive it in the city (or small town) because frankly had low miles for the year and price, plus the cherokees seem to hold up well. We didn't really want a SUV but honestly there were limited smaller cars out there (for obvious reasons) and a TON of big gas gurgling SUV's so we opted for the smaller evil.

I hate to be apologizing but my Jeep's love of gas but until finances change I can't afford a Subaru (as much as I really wanted one) or a Toy, or a honda

I bought it in 2003. Now, I would look seriously at the Prius. I only bought a new car because my Taurus had about had it. Ford was dragging its feet on the hybrid Escape, so the Jetta was it. Once it is paid for, I don't see getting another car for a very long time. There is nothing like a paid for car that runs well. There is also the environmental impact of building a new car to consider. Drive it until the wheels fall off or something, then go for the most efficient car that meets your needs.
