Scarborough: W Gave Wink 'n Nod for Mean Miers Leak

Before leaping from the nearest ledge, I was able to record one salient segment: the startling allegation from Joe Scarborough that President Bush was behind the recent nasty leak on Harriet Miers.

As will be recalled, after Miers' disastrous foray as a Supreme Court nominee, she returned to her position as White House counsel. However, as per this NY Times article, Miers might be next on new WH Chief of Staff Josh Bolten's hit list. The article cited GOP sources to the effect that Bolten believes Miers "is indecisive, a weak manager and slow in moving vital paperwork through the system." Perhaps she is, and it wouldn't be shocking to learn that's what Bolten believes.

But what is stunning was Joe Scarborough's assertion that Pres. Bush must have been behind the leak. Here's how Joe put it:

"I'll tell you what it screams and I've just got to say, if anybody really believes that Josh Bolten leaked this story to the New York Times without the approval of George Bush, a wink or a nod, then they are too naive to report the national news in Washington, DC."

Norah: "What if he (Bolten) is trying to put presh -- if he's trying to put pressure on the president?"

Scarborough: "In the Bush White House, it doesn't work that way. Josh Bolten is a Bush loyalist, he would never leak without the president knowing he was leaking, and -- or maybe they were talking in a conversation when he came on board and Bush said yeah, maybe it's time for her to go, but gee, she's a close personal friend. What is sad for -- why I feel sorry for Harriet Miers, she's been there for six years, she knows leaks don't happen in the Bush White House, she knows Josh Bolten would never leak without George Bush giving the go-ahead."

The Bushies' concern began while he was running for a second term as governor. A hard-nosed Dallas lawyer named Harriet Miers was retained to investigate the issue; state records show Miers was paid $19,000 by the Bush gubernatorial campaign. She and other aides quickly identified a problem--rumors that Bush had help from his father in getting into the National Guard back in 1968. Ben Barnes, a prominent Texas Democrat and a former speaker of the House in the state legislature, told friends he used his influence to get George W a guard slot after receiving a request from Houston oilman Sid Adger. Barnes said Adger told him he was calling on behalf of the elder George Bush, then a Texas congressman. Both Bushes deny seeking any help from Barnes or Adger, who has since passed away. Concerned that Barnes might go public with his allegations, the Bush campaign sent Don Evans, a friend of W's, to hear Barnes's story. Barnes acknowledged that he hadn't actually spoken directly to Bush Sr. and had no documents to back up his story. As the Bush campaign saw it, that let both Bushes off the hook. And the National Guard question seemed under control.”

It gets better, if not dirtier. At roughly the same time Miers was helping Bush dodge National Guard questions; Bush had named her chair of the Texas Lottery Commission, which had been scandal-plagued for years. The chief issue before Miers and the commission was whether to retain lottery operator Gtech, which had been implicated in a huge Texas bribery scandal.

Too much dangerous debris on the streets, but even worse are the drivers. People go through stop signs and red lights all day and night now because there are few police around. 10. Bush HAS to get a new personal lawyer before he's called to testify

on any of the explosive matters on the horizon. According to rules of professional responsibility and ethics for attorneys, they cannot knowingly allow their clients to perjure themselves, i.e., lie under oath. That is why the first thing criminal lawyers tell their clients is, "Don't tell me if you're guilty." Since Miers advised Bush asgovernor of TX and president, she would know exactly when he was lying. Then unless she is willing to risk loss of her license and spending hard time in a club fed, she, as all attys. are obliged to do in the event their client lies under oath, would have to go to the judge and announce she was withdrawing her representation of her cient. Because of lawyer-client confidentiality rules, she could not explicitly tell the judge that her client was lying/perjuring. However, every judge, prosecuting atty., and anyone familiar with the judicial system knows that this is why she would be withdrawing. If there were ANY other reason (personal health problems; family crisis, etc., the atty. would tell the judge. With a new lawyer, Bush could lie through his teeth under oath and not run into that problem. You recall that Bush refused to answer under oath the questions of the 9/11 Commission. Similarly, the heads of the Big Oil companies refused to take an oath prior to appearing before the Senate. In the warped GOP universe, you can lie all you want, just never raise your hand, place the other one on a Bible and swear to tell the truth. Cause THAT is what could land them in prison, and they never know when one of their underlings may turn on them in a plea bargain and reveal the lies.
It was particularly vicious to trash her professional abilities as Bolton did, and the language he used sounds to me like it came from either Cheney or Rove. I can easily imagine poor little Harriet trying to cover W's ass by questioning some of the outrageous moves made by Cheney or Rove and actually studying an issue before telling Bush to sign where indicated.
