Brooks Brothers rioters get top WH posts. Where's the outrage?

Brooks Brothers Rioters in the White House....
Several of the rioters ended up with top White House jobs, including Matt Schlapp (#6), the White House political director, and Gary Malphrus (#2), deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council.

Today another rioter, Joel Kaplan, was given one of Karl Rove's jobs (Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy), a promotion from his current job as White House deputy budget director. Kaplan has never expressed any regrets; in fact he bragged about his role.

quoting Robert Parry:

''The Brooks Brothers Riot – carried live on CNN and other networks – marked a turning point in the recount battle. At the time, Bush clung to a lead that had dwindled to several hundred votes and Gore was pressing for recounts. The riot in Miami and the prospects of spreading violence were among the arguments later cited by defenders of the 5-to-4 U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Dec. 12, 2000, that stopped a statewide Florida recount and handed Bush the presidency.

Backed by the $13.8 million war chest, the Bush operation made clear in Miami and in other protests that it was ready to kick up plenty of political dust if it didn’t get its way.

A later unofficial recount by news organizations found that if all legally cast ballots in Florida had been counted – regardless of which kinds of chads were accepted, whether punched-through, hanging or dimpled – Gore would have won Florida and thus the presidency. Gore also won the national popular vote, defeating Bush by more than a half million votes, making Bush the first popular-vote loser in more than a century to be installed in the White House. ''

...............

I heard about this on the radio someplace, but haven't seen/read/heard anything about this till I googled tonight.

The Brooks Brothers Riot, from what I've read, was perhaps the single most significant event in the recount fiasco. Had those votes been counted, Gore would have very likely overtaken Bush, reversing Bush's entire strategy: he would have been the one to INSIST on continuing the vote.

right?

And this Kaplan Kapo is rewarded with Rove's spot in the pantheon, with nary a twitter, despite his braggadocio WRT the employment of tactics straight out of the Hitler accession.

when does the statute of limitations run out for TREASON, you smarmy Brownshirt prick?

9. I agree, nothing shocks me anymore. I suffer from outrage fatigue.
And I wanted Gore to run in '04 because I knew he would kick ** ass AGAIN! But it seems TPTB wouldn't allow him that pleasure. :grr:

8. George W. Bush has never been President of the United States
That is a picture of Tom DeLay's brownshirts.

He seized power in a coup d'etet, not an election. No American, military or civilian, owes any allegiance to that man.

furious all over again

this article has more to do with the utterly craven/complicit media than the Brownshirts, but it bears repeating to all the sheeple who still believe that the election was on the up and up

http://www.consortiumnews.com/2001/112101a.html

not news, but a good reminder as to just how bad the media will continue to be, and how difficult it's going to be to get any kind of positive message out
........

A document, revealed by Newsweek, indicates that the Florida recount that was stopped last year by five Republicans on the U.S. Supreme Court would have taken into account so-called “overvotes” that heavily favored Gore.

If those “overvotes” were counted, as now it appears they would have been, Gore would have carried Florida regardless of what standard of chad – dimpled, hanging, punched-through – was used in counting the so-called “undervotes,” according to an examination of those ballots by a group of leading news organizations.

In other words, Bush lost not only the national popular vote by more than a half million ballots, but he would have lost the key state of Florida and thus the presidency, if Florida’s authorities had been allowed to count the votes that met the state’s legal requirement of demonstrating the clear intent of the voter.

........

This new information indicating that the wrong presidential candidate moved into the White House also makes a mockery of the Nov. 12 front-page stories of the New York Times, the Washington Post and other leading news outlets, which stated that Bush would have won regardless of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling.

I would love to read the article, but that sidebar on the right covers most of it. How do I remove that obstacle?

15. a little more
OK, so Karl Rove is giving up the policy job he never should have had in the first place. Who's getting the responsibilities that have been taken away from Rove? That would be Joel Kaplan. Who's he? I'm glad you asked.

According to his official WH bio, Kaplan seems like a logical choice to coordinate policy from the West Wing. He's been helping to do this anyway since Bush took office. (Before joining the White House staff, he worked on Bush's campaign and clerked for Antonin Scalia. Natch.)

But there's also the part of Kaplan's political background the bio doesn't mention.

>>>The man Bush tapped to fill Karl Rove's spot as his policy wizard is none other than Joel Kaplan, who took part in the infamous "Brooks Brothers riot" of 2000. That's when a bunch of Washington GOP operatives, posing as outraged Floridians, waved fists, chanted "Stop the fraud!" and pounded windows in an effort to intimidate officials engaged in the Florida recount effort.

>>>In George Bush's Washington, there's no shame in staging a fake protest to undermine a democratic election, apparently: last year, the Washington Post's Al Kamen noted that "the "rioters" proudly note their participation on resumes and in interviews." Kaplan was even the one to cheekily dub the fracas the "Brooks Brothers Riot."
