Time is running out for Iran on nuke issue: US

The US does not intend to wait for months for an agreement in the UN Security Council on action over Iran's nuclear ambitions, the State Department said.

"This issue is too important to be hung up for months or years in the Security Council," US Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said in Washington on Friday after returning from a trip to Moscow for talks over Iran.

Burns held out the possibility that countries could take independent action if the 15-member Security Council failed to reach agreement.

"Those that might prevent the Security Council from acting effectively need to understand that the international community has to find a way -- and will find a way -- to express our displeasure with the Iranians," Burns said.

Supreme Iranian leader – Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is the Chief of State and He ALONE has the final say in matters of the Iranian state and the final religious authority over the vast overwhelming majority of Iranian Shiites.

In the Iranian system the elected parliament and president have limited powers. By far the single most powerful person is Chief of State Supreme Leader Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He has the final say. No other mullah, ayatollah or marja’a can override Ayatollah Khamanei’s fatwa. It is irrevocable. In addition to his political position--within the Shiite version of Islam he is what is known as a marja'a. Ayatollah Sistani in Iraq is also a a marja'a. A fatwa is a final religious decision absolutely binding on all Shiites within that marja'a's domain. All fatwas issued by a maja'a are written down and publicly announced. They carry almost as much weight as sacred scripture.

Ayatollah Khamenei issued a fatwa against nuclear weapons last August. Even if other mullahs or ayatollahs would disagree or make a contrary declaration - Ayatollah Khamanei's decision would override them and would be the final word in matters of the Iranian state and to any Shiite believers within Ayatollah Khamenei's domain which would include almost all Iranian Shiites.

9. the headline is panicky in the extreme. The State Dept. is ...

unhappy with the timescale but they have a history of breathless reports of the imminent threat from the latest demonised quarter.

They have no credibilty while Dr. Rice is in charge, she is not an orientalist and might better employ her talents gently leaning on Russia and persuading them to see things the same way as the US.

The Rovian style has proved disastrous when it comes to running a country, determining elections or serious political debate. It is even less effective as the language of diplomacy.

It is not even crisis mismanagement, characteristic of the Bush regime, this is reaction to an imagined threat.
