negatively? Well, I think we have just about reached that point. The politicians always seem to be the last to know. We might expect to hear all kinds of speechifying in the next couple or three weeks..

1. Everytime something extremely jaw dropping happens
I think, "This is what will unite us!" I do hope this is it and from the nervousness I see it could be.

2. The silent fuming has turned into a low grumble
It will escalate to yelling at $3.50. The fighting point will be $4.00, I think.

People who live in the exurbs are going to get a double whammy: high commuting costs plus a large decrease in their property values.

Another reason why I'm damn grateful I work from home
Telecommuting rocks -- my boss lives in Long Beach, I live in West Idaho ;P

3. What would happen if the politicians told the truth?
That price increases are a way of life from now on?

That because we didn't listen to President Carter in 1979, we've made the irrevocable mistake of linking our economy to imports of foreign oil?

That because oil is a finite resource and we've extracted half of the easiest to reach, we're going to spend increasing amounts attempting to extract the remaining half?

That because we listened to oil company and automotive executives we've designed our cities to be the worst possible users of energy?

Nah, we won't hear any of that. They'll lay the blame on delays in switching to ethanol from MBTE or worries about Iran.

Two words for them: Peak Oil.

4. Would it be any better if the oil companies were nationalized ?
If we're going to pay those kinds of prices, we may as well own it.
