PBS is refusing to show Dimming Sun.
It was supposed to be on yesterday and today in my area. It was scheduled, the description on the tv says it's Dimming Sun, but it's not Dimming Sun. Both times they took it off and showed some other crap. Is anybody else experiencing this in their area?

14. That was from a show on CSpan
Randi Rhodes and some rightwing nutcase.

I think the debate was over the WMDs that no one found and the nutcase stuck her fingers in her ears and began making these weird noises.

It was absolutely hilarious.

21. Janet Parshall and Randi
during the 25 hour marathon Journal celebrating 25 years of CSpan. I believe it was last October.

I forget now exactly what the argument was about but I still can't believe the GOP shill stuck her fingers in her ears on TV. Great way to win an argument dontcha think?

2. I'm pretty sure PBS aired it in my area
I get the Philly feed and the NY feed so there is a good chance it was on one or both of those stations. We also get a digital cable PBS station that was definitely airing it.

What's your location?

3. It was on last week on Nova on my PBS station
Edited on Sat Apr-22-06 03:48 PM by 48percenter
I DVR'd it. After watching it I thought, Bu$hler is right, who cares what historians think in 20 yrs., "we'll all be dead" is quite apt. It's made me depressed all week, that show. Supposedly there is something good on HBO by Larry David's wife tonight, about global warming "Too Hot Not to Handle," 7pm HBO East.

Oh, but I forgot, that is junk science. (rolls eyes)

6. Played it here in SoCal.
I snagged it on MythTV.

BTW, it's a good program, but a very, *very* scary one. :scared:

We are apparently *much* closer to a climate catastrophe than we ever imagined.
Dimming Sun is highly substantiated and has actually *moderated* global warming.
If dimming decreases due to pollution control, it could actually cause a "tilt-over"
in global warming where things change dramatically and quickly.

10. This is really pissing me off. I tried calling
but their offices are closed so I e-mailed a couple of folks at the station to try to find out what the heck is going on.

12. The individual PBS member stations are not like network affiliates
They're mostly autonomous and have to pay for every program they run. It could be like LydiaLeftcoast suggested that you just have a chickenshit PBS station. Call the General Manager and bitch about it. If you have a blog, post about this and encourage others in your area to call the GM.

18. That's not true!
The NY Times praised the program:
The first two programs are not only accessible, but their contents will also sound familiar to anyone who has listened to cycle-of-life eco-lessons from an early age. The "Nova" report on so-called "global dimming," however, is arresting, and not merely because its dynamic photography enlivens the soberness of academia. More important, recent and startling findings that "Dimming the Sun" describes subvert assumptions about global warming without discrediting them. On the contrary, it seems, the phenomenon is proving more nuanced and more dire.

Essentially the planet's particulate pollution has made clouds slightly more solid, and they now can act like big mirrors that keep the Sun's rays from reaching Earth. Beyond that, though, global temperatures will still rise as we reduce particulates. Why? As we stop sending particulates into the air, we remove a shield that has lessened the severity of observable global warming. That's right: we're worse off than we thought.

By the end of "Dimming the Sun" viewers will be able to talk about pan-evaporation, air streams above the Maldives and the potential for conflagration in the Amazon. It's an altogether more frightening hour than the others, even though it's more technical and less anecdotal.

I don't know where you get 'brutal' out of that.

19. The praise is buried...the whole tone of the article is
'fuck it, we're screwed.' Here's three films, but why waste your time watching them; we're all gonna die anyway.

22. I know nothing about this Dimming Sun issue, and just read the review...
And I got the impression that the reviewer went out of his/her way to poo-poo the show - and for essentially (1) irrelevant "poor theatrical production" issues, and also for (2) anti-intellectual "it's too complicated" reasons.

The review struck me as "yah it's completely correct, but since I wanna say something bad about it, I'll use an obviously incorrect measuring stick, and say how it fails to measure up on it".

It would be like criticizing Farhenheit wutever (Moore's documentary) for having bad wardrobe and set designers.

That's what I took from the review at any rate.

23. I watched "Dimming Sun" yesterday with my family because of this thread.
It was the most frightening Nova I have ever seen.

Personally, I believe we are past the tipping point, and have been for a number of years.

27. It could be your local affiliate that is screwing things up.
It is on in our area twice.

BTW Look for the Nature show "Tall Blondes." It's really good.
