Bill would make sale of sex toys illegal in South Carolina

By SEANNA ADCOX
The Associated Press
April 21, 2006

http://www.independentmail.com/and/home/article/0,1886,AND_8195_4641568,00.html

COLUMBIA — Lucy’s Love Shop employee Wanda Gillespie said she was flabbergasted that South Carolina’s Legislature is considering outlawing sex toys.

But banning the sale of sex toys is actually quite common in some Southern states.

The South Carolina bill, proposed by Republican Rep. Ralph Davenport, would make it a felony to sell devices used primarily for sexual stimulation and allow law enforcement to seize sex toys from raided businesses.

"That would be the most terrible thing in the world," said Ms. Gillespie, an employee the Anderson shop. "That is just flabbergasting to me. We are supposed to be in a free country, and we’re supposed to be adults who can decide what want to do and don’t want to do in the privacy of our own homes." Ms. Gillespie, 49, said she has worked in the store for nearly 20 years and has seen people from every walk of life, including "every Sunday churchgoers."

8. Cukes at Winn-Dixie: breaking & entering
Since all the Winn-Dixies are now closed due to bankruptcy, you'll have to get your cucumbers somewhere else.

But no, cucumbers will still be okay. This bill bans items used primarily for "sexual stimulation" and last I checked, cucumbers are used primarily for feeding plecostomus catfish and making those little sandwiches Society Women serve with tea.

Where have you been, DUer? Last year the warmhearted family-friendly movie "Because of Winn-Dixie" was released. About two weeks later, all the Winn-Dixie stores closed.

Somehow I think it was coincidental--the food tent I was running at my Hurricane Andrew refugee camp in Homestead was cleaner than the Winn-Dixie closest to my house.

17. Simple Solution:
Just sell the sex toys as "works of art". When you fight this battle for the MIND and its mythic realm, you have to be as creative as you can.

Changing the context changes the nature and lines of battle -- especially when the other side is tying to draw them around you. Sun Tzu would agree!

Remember how the paraphernalia vendors worked the game.

"I don't exist! This is NOT happening. There is nowhere to go from here! All that is left is the shedding of the skin."

People aren't stupid, and bongs were never sold as works of art.(though many of them are)

Should automatic weapons be sold as works of art to "work the game"?

21. Swell. Let's bring government into everyone's bedrooms.
Let's put in spycams and take detailed inventories of the "toys" found on the premises. Start with Karl Rove, then move on to the Bush girls. Dubya and Laura next, followed by Poppy & Babs. Scott McClellan & Jeff Gannon too. Let's not forget the TV personalities (calling Bill O'Reilly) and newspaper folks (Robert Novak and Judith Miller). It can be tit for tat (pun intended) for all the holier-than-thou pontificating we heard ad nauseam and endlessly about Bill and Monica.

47. But how many times do they play the lottery??? Hmmm.....
"Fundamental Christian Values" and the Lottery. They may have opposed it like crazy to begin with but I bet they play. And SC got their lottery before we did here in NC... and we're a few shades more purple than SC. (I guess we finally caved in when everyone figured out that everyone was going out of state to buy lottery tickets - and back then it was even a crime for me to type this message or mention going to buy lottery tickets (we were going to buy some "pottery"...)

I guess SC might wake up to the fact that everyone is buying their sex toys on ebay or coming up here to NC or across to GA to buy them.

Mark.

33. Hmmm...so the sale would be illegal
but I bet they could still be given away for free as "promotional merchandise." For example, buy a "Welcome to SC" postcard for $15.99 and the store will throw in a free dildo. I'd love to see gas stations advertise free giveaways with every 5th tank fill-up or whatever. Put it right out there on the billboard for everyone to see.

From the article, "Other states that ban the sell of sex toys include Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Texas." Good gawd, don't the people in these states have more important things to worry about? And Rep. Davenport wants to make the sale of sex toys a felony? A friggin' FELONY? Isn't that a rather, um, stiff punishment (yeah, pun intended) for such a minor thing? I bet Rep. Davenport is just mad that his wifey prefers her sex toy to him. If this bill passes, I hope she throws out all her sex toys and finds herself some nice 19-year-old stud as a replacement. It would serve Rep. Davenport right.

That said, I'd still love to hear the arguments in the legislature on this bill. Wish I could be there to laugh my ass off at all the insecure idiots that somehow feel their "manliness" is threatened by an inanimate object.

42. South Caroline is a copycat...TN is getting one of those laws, too
Apparently, lawmakers in this impoverished red state can't find enough serious problems to address, so they've turned their minds to sex, specifically sex toys.

For unknown reasons, State Senator Charlotte Burks (DINO) and State Rep. Eric Swafford (R) have been thinking a lot about the activities going on your bedroom. They have come to the conclusion that Tennessee will be a better place to live if the state regulates your bedroom by outlawing dildos.
