GM screwing the Union again
Edited on Tue Jul-15-08 11:22 AM by DainBramaged
The automaker also said it will defer $1.7 billion in payment to its union-led health care benefit trust for hourly retirees. Those payments had been scheduled for this year and next. Establishing the fund, called a voluntary employee beneficiary association, was a key part of the 2007 contract agreement with the union.

Subscription only, the rest of the article is just detailing the liquidity improvement efforts by Wagonerdouche at GM.

1. Maybe GM should just shut down altogether and liquidate
rather than defer any payments to the retirees. The younger current employees can always just find a new career.

maybe you should come down to a UAW hall and ask the members about starting a new career.

Another fucking expert who knows NOTHING about anything.

What do you do for a living genius?

5. Right
And when NAFTA and GATT were being pushed to further erode our manufacturing base, who were your brothers and sisters down at the union hall "voluntarily" donating their "voluntary" union dues to? And if they asked, as I did, why are we supporting the party that is killing our jobs, were they told that they were out of order like I was?

7. Answer the question
How are those "voluntary" donations to a single party from your paycheck working out for you? Do you really like having no choice where you money goes. You don't think the politicians aren't taking the union financial support for granted? What have they done for you lately.

You sound like my old shop steward, don't question the union, you might end up back on night and weekends.

11. Your response to me was telling
How are your forced donations to the Democratic Party working out for you? Do you have an option to withhold if they aren't doing the job? Didn't think so. Union members are the worst of the sheep, just go along with the leadership don't ask questions.

I have a feeling you are not one of us.

13. Sorry,
Not to intervene here, but did you just seem to quote another DUer, change his words, and then put them in bold to highlight the part that you seem to have made up?

Wow, haven't see that before.

14. I just took you off of ignore to respond
I was informed you were interfering. He sent me that as a PM to which I not only alerted the mods, I responded to him on the forum. Those were his EXACT words.

Anything else before I X you again?

15. I was under the impression that you couldn't post PM's
but I couldn't find it in the rules. I heard that from another DUer some time ago. Perhaps that member either didn't know what they were talking about, or was just making stuff up though.

X away.

16. That's a rather cold position to take with respect to union workers, don't you think?
Many of these union workers have been working 10, 20, or 30 years on the job. The younger workers may still have time to find a new career, but what will you propose for the older workers who are closer to retirement age?

3. I wonder
how much the CEO, CFO, President, etc of GM are going to make this year. If it is anything over a buck they are overpaid.

8. Not just overpaid, grossly overpaid even if it is a buck.
CEO took over sometime in 2000 when the stock was between 80 and 50 (it dropped under $9 today), and is currently losing $1 Billion a month which puts them on pace to deplete their entire cash reserve by next year (about $18 billion). The people running this company have cost both their investors and employees dearly.

4. Raise your hand if you are surprised
*looks around*

No hands? No surprise. The only reason Globalization is popular is because when workers organize and ask for a decent wage, the company can look elsewhere for workers.

I wonder how long it will take for people to kick the global corps out and not allow their products in the country without a high tariff.

The corps might play better when their markets start drying up.

9. The trick will be on turning this situation around??
Why would China, India, Mexico et-al want to change the situation (especially China) that seems to be working more in their favor than ours??

How would we get the jobs to come back??

With the international trade agreements, we can be hauled in front of a global trade tribunal and be charge with unfair trade actions depending what we do to correct a situation that never should have got this bad to begin with.

The genie is out of the bottle and we are going to pay sheer hell trying to get it back in!!

10. Pff
We can opt not to play with the WTO and everyone else as soon as our contracts expire. What the other countries want to do is irrelevant- GE, GM, Microsoft and others can have fun screwing them instead.

The jobs come back when we say so- currency, jobs and demand are interlinked. The jobs provide the demand and the strength of the currency. Globalization short circuits this logical process by taking the jobs away, thus the rest falls.

If these companies want to bankrupt a country for them to make a quick buck, let them do it to some other suckers.

12. Hard money cannot come from union dues

Soft money can. AFSCME does provide me with an opt out. I choose not to use it. I actually give to the AFSCME PAC. Yes they spent $6 million on Senator Clinton while I was backing Obama. I have no bitch with the amount. I do have a bitch about how it was done or what many considered dirty tactics. As long as AFSCME supports labor friendly (regardless of party) candidates, I will continue to donate extra $ to the PAC.
