Valmont lays off workers at McCook plant

Valmont Industries laid off about 40 workers at its irrigation equipment plant in McCook, Neb., today, company officials said.

At its peak, the plant employs about 200 people. Valmont declined to say how many people currently work at the plant.

The company said the economic slowdown was to blame.

Valmont employs more than 1,500 people in Nebraska.

Overall, it has added workers to its Midlands operations over the past year, which include steel galvanizing plants in Sioux City, Iowa, and West Point, Neb.; an irrigation equipment, pole and support structures plant in Valley, Neb., and its headquarters in Omaha, spokesman Jeff Laudin said.
