Senator Dole: Auto union needed to make more concessions

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole is disappointed that the auto workers union didn't make more concessions before a bailout proposal went to a vote.

Dole was one of 10 Republicans to vote Thursday night to allow the failed bill to move forward. But her office said Friday that she wouldn't have approved the measure. She was hoping that additional discussion of the proposal could have brought new amendments to make the bill better.

Dole's office said she wanted to lend a lifeline to the industry but was concerned that the measure didn't do enough to restructure the companies. She worried that the companies would return in a few months needed more cash.

Her North Carolina colleague, Republican Sen. Richard Burr, voted against further discussion on the bill.
