Economic Report: 522,000 Private Sector Jobs Lost In January

Economic Report:

All throughout the month of January we were bombarded with news of mass layoffs, but now what was the end total? According to the employment report from ADP, the private sector let go of 522,000 jobs in January with the service sector leading the total with 279,000 jobs lost. Small businesses, or those with fewer than 50 workers, were hit hard letting go of 175,000 employees. Mid-size businesses employing between 50 and 499 employees lost 255,000 employees. The national unemployment rate is expected to jump to 8 percent.

...that increase the number of unemployed to somewhere around 625,000?

WASHINGTON -- The government says new claims for unemployment benefits jumped to their highest level in more than 26 years.

The Labor Department says the number of laid-off workers seeking jobless benefits rose last week to a seasonally adjusted 626,000, from the previous week's upwardly revised figure of 591,000. The latest total is far more than analysts' expectations of 583,000.

The number of people that remained on the unemployment compensation rolls increased slightly to nearly 4.8 million, the most since records began in 1967, though the work force is now much larger.

I had to straighten some stuff out with the unemployment people this week- they disabled the 800 number and still had 46 calls in queue when I had to call them on 3 occasions.
