Men to learn cost of 'moral turpitude'

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITERS
COUNCIL BLUFFS — The fallout from a prostitution sting in a Bluffs hotel room could cost Omaha Fire Capt. Darren Bates both his job and his position as president of the city's fire union.
Bates, 42, was placed Wednesday on administrative leave by the Omaha Fire Department, said Joe Gudenrath, chief of staff for Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey.
"According to the fire union contract, Capt. Bates' discipline could result in his termination," Gudenrath said.
Even if he keeps his job with the department, Bates could face a stiff challenge to keep his post as union president, according to department sources.
One job not yet under siege is his elected post as a Council Bluffs city councilman. He could keep it even if found guilty of the aggravated misdemeanor. Bates' seat in the Bluffs is up for re-election in November.
He and five other men responded Tuesday to a Craigslist posting that featured the image of a scantily clad woman, according to Bluffs police.
The six men left with citations for suspicion of trying to buy sexual services, an aggravated misdemeanor. They make initial appearances in Pottawattamie County Court on Feb. 10.
If convicted, all could serve anywhere from probation to up to two years in prison.

Omaha Fire Capt. Darren Bates.
Bates was cited Tuesday in Council Bluffs on suspicion of soliciting prostitution. That citation was listed as reason for his removal in a Thursday letter written by association president Harold Schaitberger.
A copy of the letter was given to The World-Herald.
Bates, who also serves as president of the Omaha firefighters union, was placed on a paid suspension by the City of Omaha pending an internal investigation.
Schaitberger said his group will continue to monitor Bates’ situation "very closely."
