The National Football League Players Association, locked in a contentious selection process for its next executive director, announced Tuesday that it had hired outside legal counsel to investigate allegations against one of the three finalists for the job.
Chip Yablonski, a longtime counsel to the players union and other labor groups, will look into concerns, first reported by SI.com, that Troy Vincent, a former president of the union who played for 15 seasons, might have released confidential information about player agents. The union will select the successor to Gene Upshaw, who died in August, during a mid-March meeting.
“We have retained outside legal counsel to look into this matter and we will be taking the appropriate steps, including written notification to any agent who may be affected,” the union said in a statement. “Counsel is also investigating what if anything was done with any personal information that may have been transmitted.”
It was unclear what information might have been comprised, how many agents were affected and if other union officials knew about the situation.
The field of candidates was trimmed to the three finalists two weeks ago. The other candidates are Trace Armstrong, a former player and union president, and DeMaurice Smith, a partner at the Washington law firm Patton Boggs.
Vincent did not respond to an e-mail message seeking comment.
