Tuesday the United Steelworkers union will join autoworkers on Capitol Hill in a push to convince lawmakers that a strong manufacturing industry in America is worth developing a national policy to preserve it. USW Vice-President Tom Conway says saving the domestic auto industry is job one, but the Obama administration needs to also get serious about a national industrial policy.
: “We think that this administration ought to strike itself a standing permanent committee right now about American manufacturing renewal – and the value that’s there and the long term value it brings to communities.”
Conway says economic and trade policies that let U.S. manufacturing wither and die are foolish and are devastating communities throughout the U.S.
: “Manufacturing has just waned and been allowed to die n the U.S. And, I mean (we) fundamentally believe that if you don’t mine somethin’ and mill it and manufacture it and put some labor and capital against and add value to it, you really can’t have, fundamentally a solidly based economy.”
