Economic Report:

Fewer miners died on the job in 2009 – a second year of declines. Only 34 miners died on the job in 2009 making it the lowest year on record in nearly a century. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration most of the deaths were due to truck accidents on mine properties. The deadliest year on record in the United States was 1907 when 3,242 miners died on the job.

1. Unfortunately, It's probably not due to increased saftey
More likely it's because fewer are working in mining. It doesn't take many people to blow the hell out of a piece of ground and take away the coal.
