Opening day rally to protest home foreclosures, health care cuts
3 February 2010

ST. PAUL - Minnesotans will gather at the state Capitol Thursday – the opening day of the 2010 legislative session – to demand a moratorium on home foreclosures and full funding of General Assistance Medical Care, among other issues.
The rally will be at noon on the steps of the Capitol in St. Paul.

At the rally and a news conference, the Minnesota Coalition for a People’s Bailout will send the message, “Don’t Balance the Budget on the Backs of Poor and Working People!”

Spokesperson Mick Kelly said, “The economic crisis continues to hit poor and working people hard. Every month more jobs are lost and more homes hover on the brink of foreclosure. We are bringing the message to the politicians at the Capitol that this is an emergency and something has to be done.”

The organization supports HF2604, which will place a moratorium on foreclosures and evictions of renters from foreclosed properties.

Rally participants also will call for an extension of unemployment benefits to help the hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans who lost their jobs during the current recession. And they advocate the restoration of funding for General Assistance Medical Care.

Some 36,000 very poor people, many with serious chronic conditions, depend on GAMC for health care. Governor Tim Pawlenty eliminated funding for the program effective this spring.
