A man who struck a city worker while helping fill potholes urged police to shoot him when he was caught Wednesday, prosecutors said Friday.
A prosecutor said 31-year-old Bernardo Pedraza admitted to police he was in the midst of a three- or four-day meth binge when the crash, near 32nd and Vinton Streets, occurred.
The city worker, Kevin Goldman, 23, was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Pedraza is charged with two felony counts of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, driving under the influence, and obstruction. His bail was set Friday morning at $55,000 by Douglas County Court Judge John Huber. Pedraza would have to post 10 percent — or $5,500 — to be released pending trial.
Jim Mastellar, an assistant Douglas County attorney, said Pedraza was hiding behind a house when officers caught up with him. Pedraza came from behind the house and approached an officer with his hand in his waistband threatening to shoot if the officer didn't kill him, Mastellar said.
The officer was able to get Pedraza to the ground and found there was no gun.
