We are now only 94 days away from the opening of LabourStart's first-ever global solidarity conference.
People have signed up to attend from every continent. This conference represents a unique opportunity for trade unionists at all levels, from rank-and-file activists up to presidents and general secretaries, to meet and share ideas and experiences.
The conference will take place from 9 - 11 July at the McMaster University School of Labour Studies in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
We have now begun accepting registrations for the conference and I urge you register today to guarantee your participation. Please do so here.
If you pre-registered for the conference (as several hundred of you did), you won't need to repeat a lot of information. Just key in your email address and we'll walk you through the rest.
It's very important that participants in the conference pay their registration fees in advance. Full details are on the conference registration page. You can pay by PayPal, credit or debit card, or cheque.
If you have any questions about registration, payment or accomodation, please contact our conference organizing committee at canada@labourstart.org .
We're very pleased to announce that the conference will be opened by Judy Rebick, a well-known Canadian journalist, political activist and feminist. Rebick is a founder of the rabble.ca website and currently holds the Canadian Auto Workers–Sam Gindin Chair in Social Justice and Democracy at Ryerson University in Toronto.
We've scheduled dozens of workshops on a wide range of issues including China, Colombia, Iraq, Iran, Israel/Palestine, migrant workers, consumer campaigns, precarious work, the digital divide, organizing the unorganized, blogs and podcasts, Internet neutrality, working class culture, building bridges between labour and academia, and much more.
We are eager to have representatives from unions in developing countries as well, but will have a very limited budget to assist with airfares. If your union can help raise money to ensure that African, Asian and Latin American trade unionists can attend this conference, we'd appreciate it very much.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm really excited about this conference and can't wait to meet many of you in Hamilton this summer.
Eric Lee.
