FALLS CITY, Neb. (AP) — A Richardson County sheriff's employee is suing several other women within the department, saying they slandered her by publicly accusing her of having an affair with the sheriff.
June Dettmann is the county's assistant jail administrator. She filed a lawsuit last week against five current and former sheriff's department dispatchers and jailers.
During a June 22 Richardson County board meeting, the five accused her of having an affair with Sheriff Vernon Buckminster, Dettmann's lawsuit says. The defendants told county supervisors during the meeting that they believed Dettmann had been promoted to assistant jail administrator because of an affair with the sheriff, the lawsuit says.
Dettmann, who is married, has denied the accusations of an affair in her lawsuit.
Also during the county board meeting, the women produced a photo of Dettmann and Buckminster hugging in the sheriff's office as proof of an affair between the two, the lawsuit says. But Dettmann counters in her lawsuit that the picture is of a congratulatory hug she received after being promoted.
Dettmann is seeking an unspecified amount in damages from Rita Fischer, Dyann Herr, Lenora Larson, Deborah Raney and Natisha Winkelman, who all worked with Dettmann at the sheriff's office.
