Republicans who swept into office November 2nd in statehouses and governor’s mansions nationwide are determined to do all they can to kill job creation projects funded by President Obama’s economic stimulus. Wisconsin is a case inpoint. GOP Governor-elect Scott Walker is vowing to kill an $810 million high-speed rail project between Milwaukee and the state capital of Madison. Work is already underway. Killing it next year would mean costing Wisconsin millions of dollars and thousands of jobs. Robert Kraig is Executive Director of Wisconsin Citizen Action.
: “To actually cost the state millions and million of dollars to get out of this project just to service ideology and to service a campaign pledge is, as we’ve been saying, it’s economic treason. People were not voting in order to reduce jobs, reduce investments in the Wisconsin economy and do things that cost us money in the process. I don’t think there’s any mandate to do that.”
Kraig says the project would create 4732 construction jobs and another 9570 permanent jobs. Annual maintenance cost for the rail line would be just $750,000. Another Republican governor – Christie in new Jersey – recently killed a $3 billion federally funded rail tunnel project between new Jersey and New York.
: “There are already other governors lining up to say that they will take the money. The new governor of New York, Governor Cuomo, says we’d love to create more family-supporting jobs for New Yorkers and we’ll take the money if Wisconsin’s gonna turn it down.”
