Nurses are aghast at what the union calls cruel and senseless cuts to Social Security and Medicare. Michael Lighty is Director of Public Policy for National Nurses United.
: “It is an attack on the most vulnerable and it goes in the opposite direction of what we need to do, which is to shore up Social Security, improve the retirement benefit given the collapse of private sector pensions and also expand Medicare to include everyone. That’s really the only way to permanently stabilize Medicare.”
Lighty says there’s no doubt that if these proposals are adopted it will lead to misery, heartache and uncertainty for many of the most vulnerable Americans who have paid all their working lives into Social Security and Medicare. The union says it will mount a vigorous campaign against these deficit commission proposed cuts.
: “We’re going to mount a massive effort among Registered Nurses across the country over the next few weeks to oppose these proposals.”
