AFSCME’s DC 37 local in New York City is urging action on a bill that could put 1,000 laid-off workers at Off Track Betting corporation back to work. Wanda Williams, Political Director for DC37, says Republicans in he state senate are blocking legislation the company needs to reorganize and keep operating in a bankruptcy. Williams says the Republican blocking action is hurting not only these workers but the state budget, because it deprives the state of hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.
: “We urge the Republicans to break from their leaders’ misguided position and do what’s right on behalf of the state of New York, the racing industry, the New York state economy and these one thousand workers.”
Williams says Republican obstructionism on this OTB bill in New York puts another 40,000 racing-related jobs at risk. DC 37 says the votes are there if the Republicans would stop blocking the legislation. Williams says it’s not too late for the state Senate in New York to still act on this bill.
: “We don’t believe time is run out. We have the votes to be able to get this bill passed and we’re asking for the Republicans to understand that this is about the racing industry in the state.”
