ST. PAUL - A Republican representative has introduced legislation to make Minnesota a “right to work” state. Opponents say the bill is really a strategy to weaken unions and undermine wages for all workers.
State Rep. Steve Drazkowski, R-Mazeppa, introduced HF 65 to “establish freedom of employment.” The bill, if passed, would put this proposed amendment to the state Constitution on the ballot in the 2012 general election:
“Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to guarantee all citizens the individual freedom to decide to join or not join a labor union; to remain with or leave a labor union; or to pay or not pay dues, fees, assessments, or other charges of any kind to a labor union or any affiliated third party of charity, without having it affect their employment status?”
Such “right to work” measures, in effect in a number of states, destroy the best job security protection that exists: the union contract, according to the AFL-CIO. Meanwhile, these laws allow workers to pay nothing and get all the benefits of union membership.
