Dear Working Families e-Activist,
This week was historic for working families in Ohio. Thousands of workers and community members filled the Statehouse to show their opposition to Senate Bill 5 and Gov. Kasich and his political allies’ broader assault on working families.
But that was only the beginning. On Tuesday at 1PM, thousands of workers and community members will pack the Statehouse again to tell lawmakers to reject the attack on Ohio’s middle class and vote NO on Senate Bill 5, a bill that would gut workers’ voice on the job in the hopes of dismantling unions in Ohio entirely.
This assault on nurses, teachers, firefighters, police officers, sanitation workers and other public service workers is only the start of a broader partisan agenda to hurt working families and destroy the labor movement in Ohio.
We are having an impact but we need to keep the momentum going. Here are some things you can do this weekend and during the week to get involved:
Volunteer at a Phone bank: Phone banks are up and running in eight locations across the state. Help educate fellow union members about Senate Bill 5 and ask them to call their senators to reject it. Click here for more information on how to volunteer at a phone bank near you.
Organize Your Own Solidarity Event in Your Area: Plan your own creative event. It can be as simple as handing out this flier on Senate Bill 5 outside your local grocery store to educate people on the bill or holding a rally in support of public service workers in your downtown area. Click here for ideas for events and suggestions for sharing your action afterwards.
Attend an Event: If you can’t make it on Tuesday, attend on event in your area or plan a solidarity event of your own. Click here for a list of events already planned.
Call Your Senator’s Office: Let your Senator know your area in opposition to Senate Bill 5 and Gov. Kasich’s agenda. Dial 1-888-218-5931 to call your Senator and tell him/her that you oppose Senate Bill 5 and want him/her to focus on creating good jobs instead of supporting Gov. Kasich’s partisan agenda that hurts working families.
Your support over the next week is critical for us to defeat Senate Bill 5 and back beat the moves to dismantle the labor movement and, in turn, erode the middle class in Ohio.
Please take action by volunteering at a phone bank, setting up a solidarity rally in your area, attending an event, calling your Senator, and/or coming to Columbus on Tuesday at 1PM at the Statehouse.
In Solidarity,
Tim Burga
Ohio AFL-CIO President
P.S. If you haven't already, make sure you also send your Senator an email saying you oppose this measure. Click here now to send an email to your Senator.
