CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — A Wisconsin arbitrator sided with unionized faculty at the University of Northern Iowa on a wage dispute with the Iowa Board of Regents.

The new two-year contract will guarantee United Faculty a 2.25 percent increase on July 1, 2011, with another 1.25 percent increase on Jan. 1, 2012. The same increases will be awarded during 2012 and 2013. The Board of Regents had offered a 1 percent increase on July 1, 2011 and an additional 2.5 percent increase in the second year of the contract.

Stanley Michelstetter, an arbitrator from the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission, issued his decision Monday. The contract covers approximately 700 university employees.

Cathy DeSoto, the union president, said agreeing to the Board of Regents’ salary offer would have been “devastating to faculty.”

1. This will piss off Gov. Branstad. It's what I call a win-win.
