https://secure.ufw.org/page/contribute/bus51611Donate to help 269 farm workers go to Sacramento to ensure "Fair Treatment for Farm Workers Act" passes Assembly on anniversary of Maria Isavel's heat death
"On May 16, 2011 it will have been 3 years since my niece died from heat exposure. Since the beginning when I reached out to the United Farm Workers, all I wanted was that my niece's death would not be vain. I have fought for farm workers and dedicated much of these last 3 years to ensure that no more farm workers die and that no more family members of farm workers like myself have to go thru this type of situation...On this day, I will travel once again to Sacramento to urge the legislators and the Governor to give us farm workers the tools that we need to defend ourselves, by passing and signing The Fair Treatment for Farm Workers Act (SB 104). I will go again not just because it is the right thing to do; I will go because it is the only legislation that will ensure that we farm workers will have the tools to secure dignity and respect in the fields. I hope many supporters and farm workers will join us."
--Doroteo Jimenez, Uncle of Maria Isavel
https://secure.ufw.org/page/smartproxy/BSD_BAZCXAwKSEEDRB5aQwI/FQRRUA/SA/Axc/AQpEWhcBCQVLWUBSThe Fair Treatment for Farm Workers Act will be voted on in the Assembly on May 16. Farm workers want to have a presence during the vote. They want to stand alongside Doroteo and Maria's family. They want to make sure a law is in place so workers can prevent situations like Maria Isavel's from ever happening again.
The Fair Treatment for Farm Workers Act (SB 104) will give farm workers a tool to protect themselves because the State of California hasn't. This new law will make it easier for farm workers to have a union and thus have the opportunity to speak up and protect themselves.
The UFW is sending 5 busloads of farm workers, from agricultural regions in California, to be present at this vote.
To do this, however, there are expenses. Transportation and food alone for these 269 farm workers will cost $9,003 or $33.47 per worker. Can you make a donation today to make sure workers can have a seat on the bus?
No more farm workers should have to die like Maria, laboring under the scorching sun. Doroteo confided to us, "Many things have changed since Maria's death. Many things have not." Join us in making change by making your donation today.
