Workers at a new Foxconn plant in Chengdu were polishing covers for Apple iPads when their workroom exploded from the accumulation of aluminum dust. Two were killed and sixteen others injured.
The calamity was foretold. Less than a month before SACOM (Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior) had published an extensive report detailing a series of abuses, including dangerous health and safety conditions, at three new factories Foxconn was building in the Chinese interior to escape the higher wages it had to pay in coastal Shenzhen, following a series of mass suicides of young workers at its giant factory complexes there.
Apple is the sole buyer for the products of the south “campus (factory complex) at Chengdu. SACOM had appealed in vain to Apple to require Foxconn, its largest supplier, to correct the dangerous health and safety conditions at the Chengdu factory.
