Unions urge governor to veto voter ID bill

ST. PAUL - Unions are urging Governor Mark Dayton to veto legislation that would undermine Minnesota’s current voting system and make it more difficult for people to exercise their rights at the ballot box.

While not acting to create jobs or resolve the state’s $5 billion deficit, the Republican majority in the Legislature found time to pass a “voter ID” bill that imposes new requirements when Minnesotans go to the polls. Opponents say the measure is unnecessary and will have the effect of discouraging the elderly, students and others from voting.

Minnesota AFL-CIO President Shar Knutson urged Dayton to veto the legislation.

“Minnesota’s election system and voter turnout are the envy of the nation,” she said. “This bill virtually does away with same-day voter registration, a backbone of Minnesota’s elections and our strong voter turnout.

“This is an unnecessary bill that only makes it harder for eligible voters to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

“We urge Governor Dayton to veto the Voter Suppression Bill.”
