As the Labor Campaign for Single Payer Health Care prepares to meet in Washington D.C. June 3-5th, they have a shining example of what’s possible when it comes to single payer health care in the U.S. Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin has signed into law legislation that will make Vermont the home of America’s first single payer health care system. A financing package must still be passed by Vermont’s legislature and there are federal waivers required. But a strong grassroots coalition in Vermont led by labor supports single payer and will keep fighting to bring it to fruition. Governor Shumlin says Vermont’s single payer system treats health care as a right and not a privilege. At its June meeting in Washington Labor’s Campaign for Single Payer national meeting will celebrate the Vermont victory and discuss its strategic significance in the national fight for single payer.
