Sarpy County sheriff’s deputies won three years of pay increases under a three-year contract approved recently by the County Board, but saw compensation for attending driver license revocation hearings cut.

The Fraternal Order of Police, which represented the deputies, failed to persuade the county to replace its 401K retirement program with a pension system that would guarantee retired deputies a consistent level of income.

County Administrator Mark Wayne, in a memo recommending approval of the contract, said the retirement issue was “heavily discussed” during negotiations and probably will resurface in the future. For the moment, the county is holding firm.

The contract, which will be retroactive to July 1, 2010, grants sworn law enforcement officials of all ranks a 1.5 percent pay increase in year one, with increases of 3.5 percent in years two and three. How that back pay will be delivered, whether in a lump sum or over time, will be decided by the county’s payroll department.
