8 of the 10 States With the Lowest Percentage of Insured Residents Are “Right-to-Work” States

In this week’s CNN/Tea Party debate, Governor Rick Perry said that the first thing he would do if elected President would be to repeal “Obamacare.” That would be unfortunate for his constituents because Texas has the worst healthcare of any state in the union with nearly a quarter of its residents uninsured. This leaves the state in a vulnerable position because when the uninsured need emergency care and cannot pay, the burden of the cost gets placed on the Hospitals and Doctors who treat them. That cost then gets passed on to everyone else.

By cutting low cost health programs for the underprivileged, Texas has set itself up for a walk on the high wire of healthcare with no safety net. The private insurance available is in such demand that many find themselves priced out. According to the LA Times, only Mississippi has higher healthcare costs than Texas.

The Article points out that Texas is not offering the kinds of youth-aimed preventative programs that lower healthcare costs in the long run. In 2007, nearly a third of Texas children did not receive an annual physical or teeth cleaning. Seniors are also getting hurt by these policies as 1 in 5 senior patients returns to the hospital within a month of being released, one of the highest readmission rates in the country. Obama’s historic healthcare overhaul was created exactly so that borderline deathtraps like the Texas Healthcare System could no longer operate while providing poor services to the few who can pay for it while hemorrhaging money. Yet, the man who represents the state that could most benefit from the Healthcare overhaul is hell-bent on destroying it. How very Rick Perry.

…across Texas, health coverage — and health — are eroding even in places where jobs are plentiful.
