He's over a year post-SCT, and had no health issues up until last week, where he fell ill with viral meningitis, we wouldn't have known if it wasn' for my wife's car accident. we wouldn't have known that his illness (we originally thought he caught a cold) was a serious one. My mom was at scene of the accident after my wife called her to come here and assist her (she is deaf) with the communication - the accident occurred about less than a block from our house - needless to say, my mother forgot to turn off the alarm, leaving my dad alone, confused and trying to remember the code to turn off the alarm. The police/ambulance/firetruck all came and checked on him - and decided to take him to the nearby hospital, where he has been there - originally thought a stroke or a reaction to the medication, but blood cultures came back with viral meningitis.
Now, I looked up on the internet to see if there was any information on infection post-SCT, but seem that there are little information. Maybe I should focus on post-chemo or something - but I do know that my dad's immune system was compromised during the SCT, and spent over a year trying to rebuild his immune system, but this is one infection that really scared the hell out of us, even bringing my sister to Denver a few days before her international flight halfway around the world.
Fortunately, with the help of sedation and medication, my dad has finally turned the corner yesterday and well on his way to recovery. When I saw him today, he looked a LOT better than he did last week, but still very weak and tired - which is completely understandable what he went through - he was so confused and agitated that he had to be sedated repeatedly with Haldol to calm him down while he recovers.
In any case, he should be out of the ICU tomorrow (waiting on an available bed with telemetry for his heart) and into a regular bed and my son would be allowed to see him after not seeing him for almost a week. He and my dad are very very close (even when he's 5 months old!).
