My dad has large cell lymphoma

He was finally diagnosed today. I need to know if there are any lymphoma survivors, especially with his kind of cancer.

He's currently exploring treatment options.

and your entire family. I have a friend whose SIL is a 20 year survivor of lymphoma, but I don't know the type. So much has changed in 20 years.

Tell dad lots of folks are holding him in their thoughts and sending only the highest and best vibes his way. Remember to take care of yourself during this stressful time as well. Cancer affects everyone who loves the person diagnosed.

6. Additional details

My dad, to be specific, has diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The treatment discussed is CHOP-R. My dad wants to go for the cure. :)

This is good news for us, this is the most common form of lymphoma and is very treatable.

9. 2/1/07 - update - first doctor's visit

My dad went to see the doctor today. They definetely said that he will begin his CHOP-R treatment within the next two weeks (Feb 12th). The only question is what kind of pathology report they are getting. They said either an insolent large B or aggressive large B. They are scheduling him for a PET scan to make sure everything is covered.

My dad remains in high spirits.

11. 2/13/07 update - Dad gets his port

Dad got his port today. Went in early about 7am for insertion. Then X-rays showed that the port end is way too close to his heart, so they had to go back in and snip off the ends a little bit. Dad starts his CHOP-R tomorrow. He looked tired and haggard when he came home at 3pm. I'm sure he'll be as tired and haggard tomorrow, even though it's V-day.

Please make sure he isn't hesitant to ask for meds for relief of nausea. (Zofran is quite good).

14. Has the path been confirmed yet?

How about his PET? There's a lot of stress involved in getting a port inserted and it takes some getting used to. There's also a lot of stress on family during all this as you know. Take care of yourself as well as your Dad.

17. Yeah, here's an update..

My dad has just completed his 2nd chemo.

Indications are looking that he may have beaten lymphoma. He's taking CHOP-R treatment, but has to take phosphorous and insulin to counterbalance.

And he's also Mr. Clean too (he shaved his remaining hair on Sunday)

But he's in good spirits.

21. Update - 3/25/07 - Good News!

Looks like we got good news resulting from the PET scan last Thursday that my dad went through.

Looks like the chemo is working, and the lymphoma has shrunk next to nothing (zero visible - doc says all "boring gray"). That definetely put my dad in a good mood, so he was pretty cheerful, and actually let me do his work (I do work for him, after all). Tomorrow will begin his 3rd chemo, and will be at halfway done.

So, keeping optimistic, and sending my prayers to Ms. Edwards.

22. Update 4/2/07 - Roid Rage

Whew. now that I've seen roid rage first hand and up close, it's best to stay out of my father's path as he has mistakenly for the past two days taken over 150 mg of predinose. He has talked to the doctor, and they will correct the medication.

Yeah, prednisone is a pain, and 150 is a lot of that. Tastes like ass, too.

It's all striking a familiar cord...my neighbor has the same lymphoma, and has had similar results. I do have a cautionary tale that is very sad for me right now, though. He has been doing wonderfully with the chemo, and they haven't found a trace of the cancer for the last 3 months. We have all been ecstatic with this news. But he was still on some meds, noteably one that is a blood thinner. He had been having pain at one of his shot sites, and started taking ibuprofen, an NSAID, to deal with it. Last week he was rushed to the hospital and pretty well bled everything out of himself, plus another 40+ units of other people's blood before they got him somewhat stabilized. They had given him hours to live. He has fortunately survived as of 2 days ago, the last time we heard from his partner. We are still waiting for word on his condition, but we are praying that he is improving.
It just seems that it would be too devastating to know that he has kicked cancer, only to be taken from us by this horrendously easy-to-make error. Please be careful to check and double-check all medications for potential interractions!
Good luck with his excellent progress, and he must be quite a guy to have earned the love of another such excellent guy. Chin up my friend - things are sounding good for you and your dad.
